Kentucky Fain Obituary

NICHOLASVILLE - Kentucky Artist Franklin D "Howard" Fain, 73, husband of Ruth Ann Rhorer Fain for 50 years, died Sat Aug 25, 2007 at the Hospice Care Center at St. Joseph Hospital after a short illness. He was the son of the late Clifford and Beulah Fain and a lifelong resident of Jessamine County. A graduate of Nicholasville High School in 1952, he attended the University of Kentucky majoring in art. Through further training with I.C.S. in Pennsylvania, he earned a diploma in commercial art. During his years at U.K. he worked for an engineering firm as well as an architectural firm. He later held, for seventeen years, the position of Vice-President and interior designer for Faulkner-Fain Corporation. At present and for the past 35 years he has been a full time artist and author. He was the founder and operator of Howard Fain Gallery from May 5, 1958 until May 1, 1997 and had worked from his home studio since retirement. His work is found in all 50 states as well as several foreign countries. Some of his better known works are the Largemouth and the Smallmouth Bass prints that were distributed by the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society in Alabama. His Kentucky-American print was released for America's 200th Birthday, and can be found in many government offices. Drawings and stories from his book "Six Years Before Electricity" were published in 19 issues of the Country Extra magazine, based in Glendale, Wisconsin. The pictures and stories in this book are from real life experiences, as a farm boy, growing up without electricity. He has typically shown with pen and brush many of his native Jessamine County's past scenes. Churches, schools, historic buildings and related subjects have become his favorite subjects. He has published over 400 pieces in limited edition and has done more than 700 private commissions for collectors over the United States. Other than his wife, he is survived by a son, Jessamine County Circuit Clerk Howard Douglas "Doug" Fain and his wife, Amy Pritchett Fain and his 3 youngest grandchildren, Haleigh Cecilia Fain, Jonathan Pritchett Fain and Katherine Elizabeth "Katie Beth" Fain, all of Nicholasville. His other son, Cecil Allen Fain, a full time Lexington, KY Firefighter, was killed in the line of duty Jan 2, 1993 while serving with the Jessamine County Fire Department. Cecil and his wife Paula had one son, Howard's oldest grandchild, Kaihlab Allen Fain. He is also survived by a daughter- in-law, Paula Carson Fain Jasper and her husband Jeff and their children, Amanda , Madison and Morgan Jasper, all of Bryantsville, and his brother-in-law William T. "Bill" Davis, Nicholasville. In addition to his parents and son, he was preceded in death by his sister, Jean Allen Fain Davis and his in-laws, Cecil and Dixie West Rhorer. He is a Charter member of Edgewood Baptist Church in Nicholasville, where he has served as Deacon, Trustee and Sunday School Teacher. He was active as a scout leader for several years. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky Fort Jackson, South Carolina and Fort Chaffee, Arkansas with the 100th Division and attained the rank of Staff Sargent. I knew Howard in the early 70's. He was always friendly, curtious, kind, and a stand up guy. Purchasing several of his prints over the years and enjoying them still today. Howard sent my wife and I a special print he had signed wishing us the best on our wedding day. This was in 1978. Sadly, I did not keep in touch as I should have. May God Bless Howard's family. I will certainly say a prayer for the family tonight. I am still interested in Howard's works if there any still available. Howard had assigned

I have so many fond memories of your family. Howard gave so much to this world and his memories and work will last until the end of time. Few men can give the gift that Howard has given to all mankind to enjoy throughout time. Your family has made a place in my heart that has carried me through the ups and downs of life. Please be assured that you are in the prayers of many and with that all things are possible.

Ruth Ann,

I'm so sorry to hear the news about Howard. You don't know how much you and Howard have meant to me through the years and the memories made during the times I would visit "the farm" with Cecil. I will be out-of-town and won't be able to attend the services but you will be in my heart and on my mind during these trying times. I ask that God comforts you and fills you with peace in knowing that things are much better for Howard now. What a glorious reunion it must have been in Heaven yesterday.

Howard Fain will always be remembered in our family. We have several paintings of his, but one very special painting he did for my family was of our view at Herrington Lake in the house that I grew up in. I'm not sure what year it was when I asked him do that, Mark and I werent married yet, but it is very special to me as my parents are now gone and we sold that house, but I look at the painting and feel like I'm looking out at the Lake at home. I just wanted to share that with you and let you know we are thinking of you and your family.

To the Fain Family:
You would not know me but my husband Charles L. Young served with Mr. Fain in the 100th Division back in the early 1960's. Mr. Fain gave my husband an etching he drew of me which was taken from a photo that my husband carried in his wallet. I still have it today along with one piece of artwork that we purchased for our home. It was "Pioneer Wheels of Progress" dated 1968.

My sincerest sympathy to the family who loved him and to those who were fortunate to have him touch their life in some way.

Hi Ruth Ann, Doug and all the Grandchildren -- My sincerest sympathy to the entire family. It's such a sad time for all of you. I've had you (and Howard) in my prayers during his illness. In fact, I was very saddened when I learned of his diagnosis; but, was praying for a miracle. We know he has no more pain and is in a better place but this doesn't take away your heartache and we know you'll miss him. When I was home August 17 for my nephew's wedding, I was able to purchase four of his paintings (the 2 UK prints for my nephew, and the beautiful KY Cardinal & Chrisman Mill School for me) which I will proudly display in my home in Austin, TX. I'm so thankful I was able to get these prints.
You're in my thoughts and prayers.

My condolences to the Fain family. When my sister and I visited our childhood home in Wilmore, we purchased several of Mr.Fain's prints. He chatted with us as if we were old friends and he asked where the prints were going. He smiled when my sister said that hers were going home to Alaska. I was impressed with his gentle nature and his amazing talent.

Dear Ruth Ann, Doug, and Family:
We are so sorry to hear of the loss of one of our favorite persons here on this earth. He will always be in our minds for the rest of our lives. We will keep your family in our prayers and may God bless each and everyone of you.

I read this some place and thought that it would be appropriate in Memory of Howard.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
