Harvey Carrow Obituary

KINSTON - Harvey Hill Carrow, age 85, died at Lenoir Memorial Hospital on Wednes-day, September 17, 2008. Harvey was born on January 10, 1923, in Washington, North Caro-lina, to the late Hattie Jones and Claude Lee Carrow. The Carrow family moved to Kinston in 1932. Harvey graduated from Grainger High School in 1940 and matriculated to Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina. While at Davidson he led the Cheerleading Squad, was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and Omicron Delta Kappa Honorary Society, and a participant in the ROTC program. At the conclusion of his junior year, Harvey entered the United States Army and was engaged in the European theater. Harvey attained the rank of Captain in the Army Infantry where he became a unit commander in the 63rd Infantry Division of the Seventh Army, also known as the Blood & Fire Division. The 63rd Division engaged in 125 straight days of combat in France and Germany in 1944 and 1945. The 63rd is considered to be the division that broke the back of the German Army, having led the first major break in the German front and eventually pursuing the fleeing Germans across the Rhine and then the Danube. Harvey led A Company of the First Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, through the Alsace region of France where the battalion became the first to break through the famous Siegfried line and later received a Presidential Battle Honors Citation for Outstanding Performance of Duty in Action. During battle around Jebsheim, when all superior officers were killed, Harvey took over leadership of his division and suc-cessful captured a major German-held hill that was considered critical to the final push into Germany, leading to the end of the war. Harvey returned to Davidson College after the war where he became a noteworthy member of Alpha Sigma Sigma Fraternity and completed his college degree in 1947. He married Senora W. Lindsey in Tarboro, North Carolina on April 23, 1949. During the Korean Conflict in July 1952, Harvey re-entered the U.S. Army as a member of the U.S. Army Reserves. On April 1, 1953, he was Honorably Discharged from the U.S. Army. Harvey went on to complete dealership training at General Motors and be-came the youngest ever graduate of the program. He took over ownership of Carrow Buick Company in Kinston and managed the business until its sale. He became owner of Carrow Travel and then owned and operated Vehicle Analysts and Consultants until his retirement. Harvey was a cherished member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church where he served as Junior Warden, a member of the church vestry, taught Sunday school, and ushered regularly at the Sunday early service. While living in Kinston, Harvey served on several boards including Lenoir Memorial Hospital and the Kinston Country Club. He was also a member of the Kin-ston Kiwanis Club. Harvey is survived by his loving wife Senora; his son, Hill and wife Sheri-lyn, of Morrisville, North Carolina; his daughter Lindsey, of Port St. Lucie, Florida; and his granddaughter, Casey Carrow, of Morrisville, North Carolina. He is further survived by two nieces, Harriet Spicer, of Winchester, Virginia and Susan Fox, of Kinston; and a nephew, Carrow Fort, of Raleigh. Harvey was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Hodges and Hattie Mobley, of Kinston; a brother, Claude Carrow, of Front Royal, Virginia; and his granddaughter, Heather Dees. Funeral services for Harvey Hill Carrow will be held at 11a.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2008, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 800 Rountree Street, Kinston. The Reverend Michael Singer will officiate. Interment will be immediately following the service in the garden of St. Mary's Church. Relatives and friends are welcome to visit with the family in Moseley Hall at the church following the Interment. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Mary's Episcopal Church or the charity of one's choice. Edwards Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. While I did not know Mr. Carrow well, his son Hill is a friend and former team mate from UNC and the swimming team. Our thoughts and prayers go to Hill and his family at this time.

As an old classmate of Harvey's, I would like to offer my condolences to his family and friends. He was likeable and very friendly to all who knew him. He seemded to be active in eveything. High school was so "beautiful" those days. We graduated from Grainger High School in 1940. Of course, I hadn't seen him in many years, but I was still sorry to hear of his death. I often wonder how many of us are left. I will be 85 in December and live in Chicago. Again my sympathy to all.

I was blessed to live next to Harvey & Senora during the majority of my childhood. Harvey was always prepared with a joke and a friendly smile whenever you saw him. As I have moved my family to several different states I have always hoped that I would once again have neighbors just like the Carrows. I honestly feel that I have lost a family member. My deepest sympathies for your loss, and please know that you are in my prayers.

What a wonderful and knowledgeable person Harvey was! I first met him at the start up of First American Carriers in Rocky Mount, NC where he was doing some consultant work for MBM Corporation. At the time he drove an old car with over 150,000 miles on it and said he had NEVER changed the oil in it....only added a quart every now and then! I think of him everytime I get my oil changed..wondering if I am wasting my money! He was loved and admired by all those whose lives he touched. I am proud to have known him. My deepest sympathy to his entire family.

I had the honor of working with Harvey 22 years ago while he consulted for MBM Corporation in Rocky Mount. Deepest condolences from all of us who had the privilage of working with such an honest, knowledgeable man for too short a period of time. He left an impression on those he worked with here that will never be forgotten.
