Doris Marie Stuber
LA CROSSE - Doris Marie Stuber, La Crosse, WI, died on January 24, 2024 at age 97. She was born September 17, 1926 to Margaret Helen (Kelly) and Everett James in Sparta, Wisconsin. She was raised in Sparta, receiving the sacraments at St. Patrick's Catholic Church and graduating from Sparta High School where she developed a love for music, playing violin and piano; she was always singing and whistling.
Doris was united in marriage with William Joseph Stuber in May of 1949. The couple built a house on the south side of La Crosse where they lived for more than 70 years, raising 12 children. She was an original member of St. Thomas More Church (now Mary Mother of the Church) where she sang in the church and funeral choirs and volunteered behind the scenes for many church events, including the annual smelt fry, chicken que, rummage sale, and countless other events and celebrations.
She was a strong supporter of Catholic education, sending all of her children to St. Thomas More Grade School and then Aquinas High School. Doris was a woman of faith and a woman who rarely sat still. In her child-raising years, she somehow kept up the daily chores of cooking, cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping, and the unending demands of running a household of 14. She was a good cook who shared her love for visiting friends, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren by lovingly feeding them. She was also a skilled seamstress, continuing her mother's role of keeping generations of Stubers clothed in flannel pajamas.
She is survived by William, her husband of 74 years; sister-in-law, Frances Smith; children: William Jr. (Kimberly), Thomas (Mary), Joseph (Lynda), Peter Donndelinger, Nickolas (Kathryn), Edmund (Ruth Rosimo), John (Ramona Gonzalez), Anne (Edwin) Servais, Mary (Bryan) McGuan, Patricia (Michael) Marco, Robert (Mary Lee Eischen), and Doris along with 30 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, and the many children and grand children of Doris and Bill's siblings.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Margaret Rose Donndelinger, her parents, her sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Robert Malnight, and brother, Thomas Everett James.
She is also preceded in death by her life-long friends Maxine and Jim Kroner, Steve and Marian Pavela, John and Hellen Pavela, Marie and Bob Daley, Richard and Betty Schimshak, Henry and Ellen Funk and her childhood friend Miriam Runde (Hansen) and her husband Dave.
The family is grateful for the professional and loving care provided by the staff at Benedictine Villa in La Crosse, Mayo Hospice, and Quality Comfort Care.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM, January 29 at Mary Mother of the Church, 2006 Weston St, La Crosse, WI. Rev. Brian D. Konopa will officiate with entombment to take place in Catholic Cemetery. Family and friends may visit at the church from 9:00 until the time of the Mass. Memorials are preferred.
