Lawrence Holzer Obituary

Lawrence 'Larry' Holzer

Lawrence "Larry" Holzer, left this life to be reunited with his wife of 53 years, Aquilla (Jones) Holzer. Dad was born Jan. 24, 1934, in Haverhill Township, Minn., to Doris (Haney) and Byrl Holzer. He died Friday, Jan. 8, 2021, at St. Francis Hospital. in Monroe, La.

Dad joined the Air Force in 1952. He served his country in the Korean War and while on maneuvers at Selman Field, in Monroe, he met mom. They were married within months, Jan. 3, 1956, in West Monroe. They lived for many years in Monroe, where he ran Larry's Gulf/Larry's Chevron. They later made their home in West Monroe. They enjoyed taking summer trips to Wisconsin, and traveling to Florida, with friends. Dad spent most of his time at the station, where he never met a stranger. He always found time for others and considered everyone a friend.

Survivors include two children, Patricia (Lane) Newman of West Monroe, and Lawrence (Maribeth) Holzer of West Monroe; four grandchildren, Sarah Harris of St. Augustine, Fla., Autumn (Cody) Ibanez of West Monroe, Trey Holzer of Monroe, and Jessica (Cole) Wisenor of West Monroe; and eight great-grandchildren. Dad is further survived by eight siblings, Marlene (Mel) Bremer, Grace Purdy, Joyce Murphy, Tom (Bonnie) Holzer, Dave (Jeannie) Holzer, Chuck Holzer, Cheryl (Tom) Teff, and Pam (Tom) Mumau.

Dad was preceded in death by his wife, Aquilla; his parents, Byrl and Doris; his sister, Ardith Holzer-Lezpona; and in-laws, Bob Purdy, Mary Lou Holzer, William Murphy, and Charles and Cloteal DeLand.

Dad graduated from Aquinas High School in 1952. He was a faithful attendee of his class reunions. He studied physics by attending night classes at Northeast University in Monroe, while starting his family business, Larry's Gulf, during the day. He owned and operated the station for 57 years.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 15, at St. Paschal's Catholic Church in West Monroe, with visitation prior to the service. Burial will be at the Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery.

"We are better for knowing you, better for loving you, better for having met you. May you be as blessed in the next life as we are for having known you in this one."

Larry and I were best friends. We went to Aquinas together - we enlisted in the Air Force together. We went to basic training in San Antonio. One of his favorite stories was I was washing windows in a women's clothing shop where I worked. He came up Main Street - I asked where are you going? He said I'm going to enlist in the Air Force. He said I threw down the squeegee and I said - wait I will go with you! He then went to Illinois and I went to Mississippi and we didn't see each other until we were both discharged. He had in the meantime married Aquilla. When Patty was born - he asked me to be her Godfather. He was a wonderful friend. Rich Collins

Never knew Larry, but his sister, Joyce, might vaguely remember me. 4 of my 10 siblings have already passed.
guess we're all about this age, when we get to discover our final reward. I am Aquinas Class of 1958. Condolences to all family .

So sorry about this but joyful for him that he is with Jesus. I met him a year ago when my Mom came to Rosemont. He was always smiling. Very sweet. I learned that he was a dancer and loved music! Prayers for peace for the family.

So sad to see this. Knew Larry as a child when my parents traded at his Gulf station and then after I was grown too. Also knew him as a band parent at Wossman High School when his daughter Patty was in band with me. He was always such a nice friendly man. Prayers for the family
