Peter Lucic Obituary

Dr. Peter Churchill Lucic, DDS
June 4, 1943 - November 9, 2021
La Jolla, CA
Contrary to frequent family jokes of setting off into the sunset in a kayak, Dr. Peter Churchill Lucic, DDS, passed in his home in Santa Rosa on November 9, 2021, after a lifelong battle with Multiple Sclerosis. He was born June 4, 1943 to the late Hugo (Lucas) Lucic and Althea Davis, in San Diego, CA. He is the eldest of three, and the self-identified peace maker, with which his brother Hugo Lucic and sister Tana (Lucic) Paget, may or may not agree. As a teen, he could often be found catching a wave and sitting on top of the world. After graduating from La Jolla High School in 1961, he enlisted as an officer in the military to support the Vietnam War, where he was denied entry due to his unique thumbs. Ever the perpetual student, he received a Master's in paleobotany from the University of California, Berkeley, a doctorate in dental surgery from University of the Pacific in 1974, and an architecture license from Southern California Institute of Architecture. After completing his architectural license, he decided to return to practicing dentistry, applying his DDS degree of a "double dumb s**t" (his words) to provide for his family. Ever the provider, he taught the valuable lesson not to follow in his footsteps, but to pursue what you love rather than the money. His love of the ocean often brought him to the water, including scuba diving, the second best day of his life when he bought a sailboat, and the first best day of his life when he sold it. He could also be found with a set of binoculars in hunt of local birds, serving on the board of the Torrey Pines Association and remaining a lifetime member, and serving as a docent for the Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods of Sonoma County Whale Watch. Among his adventures include the foundation of the High Valley goat herd, fondly referred to as the "Funny Farm," where he demonstrated his expert chemistry skills by creating the best goat cheese. He dedicated many years as a HAM radio operator, and Morse code dabbler, including the fun reminder that the letter D is "dad did it" (dash-dit-dit). He was a member of the Santa Rosa Amateur Radio Club and Four C's Radio Club. KG6JSI is now a Silent Key. In the evenings, he enjoyed such classics as The Vicar of Dibley, and The Golden Girls. He was an active member of Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church, serving on the Mercy and Justice Committee. He was a great dad and loving husband, and will forever be remembered for his kindness and selflessness. Peter is survived by his loving wife, Carol (Howe) and two children Emily Lucic (Martin Wade) and William Lucic. Services will be held at 9:30 am Sunday November 21, 2021 at Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church, 500 Robinson Road, Sebastopol, CA 95472. For those who cannot attend in person, a live stream will be available on Facebook through the "St. Stephen's Episcopal Church" page. In lieu of flowers, any donations may be sent to Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church at the same address. Daniels Chapel of the Roses, 707-525-3730, assisted the family. Dearest Carol, we are so so sorry to learn of Peter´s passing. It´s a great loss to all who knew him. I enjoyed our friendship and that of your folks after we moved into 6029 Waverly in 1986. Your folks made us feel so welcome and I still have some of your Dad´s beautiful watercolors. So long ago I remember you and Peter opted to leave High Avenue here to start a new life up north. I hope you were happy there. If you ever visit La Jolla please get in touch so we can have a visit. Take care of yourselves and prayers for Peter and for you and yours. Love, Carol Shrigley & Family
