Richard Slocum Obituary

Mr. Richard Lee Slocum, age 73, of Lake City, Florida passed away at his residence following a long illness. Mr. Slocum was born in Oak Harbor, Washington and spent 34 years in the U.S. Army before moving to Tallahassee, Florida and then to Lake City, Florida 24 years ago. He worked as a registered nurse with the V.A. Medical Center and Shands Lake City Hospital and became an instructor with Florida Gateway College Nursing Program in Lake City, Florida. Mr. Slocum graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Nursing, was an Army veteran having been stationed in Germany, Korea and served two tours in the Vietnam War where he received the Purple Heart award. He was a member of the Hopeful Baptist Church and loved riding his motorcycle on short trips. He was preceded in death by his parents, William L. and Beatrice Mayfield Slocum and his brother Dennis Slocum. He is survived by his wife, Carol Slocum of Lake City, Florida; two sons, Nathan (Christy) Slocum of Cumming, Georgia and Jeremiah (Cassandra) Slocum of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; three grandchildren, Ethan Slocum, Ryan Slocum and Cameron Slocum; one sister, Brenda (Robert) D'Augustine of Bluffton, South Carolina. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Slocum will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday, Nov. 18, in the Hopeful Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Young, Pastor, officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Hopeful Baptist Church Cemetery, Lake City, Florida. Visitation and gathering with the family will be from 10 to 11 A.M. Saturday (one hour before services) at the church. GUERRY FUNERAL HOME, 2659 S.W. Main Blvd., Lake City, Florida is in charge of arrangements.
