Florence Blight Obituary

Blight, Florence Palmer Cooper (90)
Born July 18, 1913 in Los Angeles, she passed away in Pasadena on January 7, 2004 with several members of her family at her side. She is survived by her children: Katharine Chituras, Susan (William) Steele, Reynold (Joanne Saliba) Blight, and Charles (Sayuri) Blight. Florence leaves grandchildren Elizabeth Chituras, Charlene Chituras, Christopher (Wendy) Steele, Victoria (Douglas) Keller, Alex, Andrew, Leonidas Blight, and nine great-grandchildren. Florence predeceases her 99-year-old stepmother, Ora Cooper. Florence graduated from Los Angeles High School, attended Pomona College and graduated from UCLA in 1934. She was a dedicated and creative high school English and Special Education teacher for the Los Angeles and Compton school districts for more than 30 years, and an avid world traveler throughout her life. Florence was a pioneer in philanthropic work in Los Angeles as a founding member of the Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary Board. During the post WWII years, she was a trained volunteer at the innovative neonatal clinic at the Good Samaritan Hospital. Florence was an active 73 year member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and was honored as its 1995 Woman of the Year. She was a 50 year member of National Charity League and a Coronet Patroness. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held on Friday, January 16, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Wee Kirk o' the Heather at Forest Lawn Glendale. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to: The Gamma Phi Beta Foundation, 12737 East Euclid, Centennial, Colorado 80444.
