James Sleeper Obituary
April 16, 1927 - Sept. 27, 2012
James D. Sleeper. Born in Santa Ana on April 16, 1927, Jim lived his whole life in Orange County, eventually devoting his life to retrieving her colorful past as the County's premier historian. Jim held off cancer twice over a period of 13 years but finally succumbed to its ravages on September 27, 2012, at the age of 85.
A memorial service will be held at Fairhaven's Waverley Chapel at noon on Friday, October 12. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Cancer Society of your choice.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Jim's passing. I always looked forward to his interesting history stories of old Orange County. I don't believe there is anyone left who could fill his shoes. May he rest in Peace

My 44-year career as a newspaper sportswriter-reporter-book reviewer-travel journalist was the result of Generator editor Jimmy Sleeper advising me to take a journalism class at Santa Ana High in 1944. I wrote for the Bakersfield Californian for 8 years and the Fresno Bee for 30 years. I have since published three books, Ink in My Veins, Marching to the Sound of Mariachi and Peasant in a Paper Suit. He was a great guy and one of my first role models.
