I miss you and remember you with delight. You were always the coolest member of our family and the beloved brother to Alice, our Mom. It makes me happy to know how many peoples' lives you touched and how many others found you to be the compassionate, witty, caring person I always knew. In peace and love, mon oncle -- Niece Libby

John and Pat were such good friends to me and my partner Max Cifuentes. Max had been John `s student and greatly influenced his thinking. Max passed away 20 years ago and I live in NYC. I have fond memories of dinners in their canyon retreat. My condolences to Pat.

I still, and will always, miss that guy on the trail. He always brought cheer (and Pat!) along on his walks.

He was our closest family friend in the early 60s. Who especially important to me and my sister Lisa and my mother Jean. Because of him I continue to be inspired by Karl Marx.

Our family’(Ed, Karen, Chris, Lisa, and especially Jean) loved and were inspired by John — each in our own way). Karen is grateful to take time to think about him now. He was caring and kind and looked after my sister and me when we needed it the most. His take on Marx is the bedrock of what I believe today.

John, along with his partner Pat, had brightened the trails of the Santa Monica mountains for years. Having lost track of both John and Pat recently, I had noticed that the light in the local hills had not been what it was. It is always beautiful on those trails. But it had been clear to me in recent times that something was missing. No I see that the thing that was missing was dear John.
We will always remember his bright light. And so will the hills, where the clearest histories are kept.

John was very important to me as a friend, colleague and comrade. He made major intellectual contributions to furthering social justice as well as being an activist for most of his life. I miss you very much.

I was so sorry to hear of John's passing when I searched for him online today. He was a long-time and dear friend of my mother, Elizabeth, who passed away almost a year ago. John and Mom shared many wonderful times together as colleagues and friends. I thank you, John, for your unique, brilliant spirit and for being such a good friend to my mom for all those years. May you Rest In Peace ....

I love you, John. Your knowledge in Marxist sociology made you a brilliant academic advisor, and your kindness, generosity and compassion made you my wise spiritual ancestor. Your praxis will continue with us. With deep gratitude, I light an incense to honor your life and work. Love and hugs to Pat.
