Margaret Kahn Obituary

Margaret "Bobby" Gunn Kahn passed from this earth to her eternal home on September 18th, 2022, in Beverly Hills, California. She was born on August 1, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan, to Russel Allyn Gunn and his wife, Margarette McVicker. She grew up in Grosse Pointe and the family moved to Pasadena in 1938. Bobby graduated from Marymount High School in 1948. One of her favorite high school anecdotes involved a school trip to the Vatican, whereupon having an audience with Pope Pius XII, she exclaimed loudly, "Your Holiness! I love your slippers!" This was always delivered in inimitable Bobby style: droll and matter of fact. Her cultivation of things beautiful and artistic was to span a lifetime.

In 1952, Bobby married Charles "Jiggs" Irwin, and they had a daughter, Melinda, in 1954. In 1960, she married producer Carter De Haven III and in 1961 they had a son Carter, and in 1966, a daughter, Brooke. The family spent several years in Europe, and here Bobby made a point of acquiring a myriad of European classic antique furniture and other centuries old furnishings and artwork that filled their homes with grace and dignity. Improving the lives of her children and grandchildren was the great delight of her life.

On Nov. 6th, 1996, she married composer Donald Kahn. Bobby immersed herself in the world of Jazz and joyfully anticipated their trips to New York, where listening to the likes of "Skitch" Henderson play the piano at the Hotels Regis/Carlyle/Pierre was always a highlight. After Donald's death, Bobby turned her attention to playing bridge and was a regular on the local weekly circuit; we all knew not to interfere with bridge time. Bobby was also a regular member of Saint Victor Catholic Church in West Hollywood.

Bobby spent her last few years at Sunrise of Beverly Hills, and her family appreciates the dedicated assistance of the Sunrise staff.

Bobby is predeceased by her husband Donald, her parents, her brother Richard, her daughter Brooke De Haven Atallah, and is survived and missed by her daughter Melinda, son Carter "Chip" De Haven IV, daughter-in-law Jane, son-in-law David Atallah, former daughter-in-law Julie DeHaven Cohen, and her adored grandchildren: Carlye De Haven Kesner, Chelsea De Haven Sundling, Carter De Haven V, Patricia De Haven, Tess Atallah, Davis Atallah, and two great-grandchildren, Sophie Brooke Kesner and Quinn Margot Sundling.

At the forefront was her humor. Her involvement with people was on an individual and interested basis. It was so good to see her come over to say hi and chat at the Bridge club. She became my idol when she rushed through to last hand of the day to say she didn't want to be late to cocktail hour. Miss you Bobby.
