Nancy Smith Obituary

SMITH, Nancy Anne, Psy.D. Nancy Anne Smith, Psy.D., for more than 30 years a respected Psychoanalyst and Clinical Psychologist in Southern California, died December 3, 2008 at the age of 61 in the home of her sister, Brenda Thomas in Centreville, Virginia, after 18 arduous months with pancreatic cancer. Dr. Smith was born March 26, 1947, in Camden, New Jersey. In 1978 her memoir "Winter Past," based on childhood experiences, was published by Inter-Varsity Press and enjoyed a wide international readership. She received her first Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Rosemead School of Psychology at Biola University in Los Angeles, and a second Psy.D. in Psychoanalysis from the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles, where her dissertation "From Oedipus to Orpha" was awarded ICP's first Daphne S. Stolorow Memorial Essay Prize in 1998, and subsequently published in the American Journal of Psychoanalysis. A sought-after teacher and lecturer, she was on the faculties of both the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis and the Newport Psychoanalytic Institute. Prior to her last weeks, she had been a longtime resident of Yorba Linda, California. Dr. Smith is survived by her siblings Brenda J. Thomas, Sharon Leferovich, William Nawalany, Jeff Holobusky, and Brian Holobusky, loving nephews and nieces, and a host of devoted neighbors, friends and colleagues. A memorial service with reception to follow will be held on Saturday, February 14, at 1 p.m., at Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive, La Canada Flintridge, California 91011. Donations in Dr. Smith's memory may be made to USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, Office of Development, 1441 Eastlake Avenue, Room 8302, Los Angeles, California 90033.
