Richard Hoffman Obituary

June 3, 1926 - August 5, 2015 Richard L. Hoffman of Los Angeles died peacefully on August 5, 2015. Born in Los Angeles on June 3, 1926, he attended Los Angeles High School, graduating in 1944. He joined the United States Navy as a radio technician in the Pacific theater and was discharged in 1946. He met his wife, Evelyn, at Stanford University from which he graduated with an Engineering degree in 1950. They wed in San Mateo, CA, in 1952 and moved to Los Angeles. Richard went to work for his father at the Hoffman Candy Company, eventually taking over and serving as president for most of his adult life. Known as 'Dick' or 'Hoffy' to friends, Richard was a boxer and gymnast in college and, for the bulk of his long life, an avid golfer and member of Wilshire Country Club, where he was a two-time champion of the Norman Macbeth Invitational. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, and four children: Jennifer Essen, Craig Hoffman, Thomas Hoffman, Martha Kauffman, and 7 grandchildren.

I am heartbroken to hear of Dick's passing. He was a teacher to me, a mentor, a confidant, and just a terrific friend. My thoughts are with all of you.

Dear Evelyn, Jennifer, Craig, Tom and Martha and families,

We were so sorry to read about Dick this morning. He was such a vital great friend to our family as were you all for many years. We have lots of memories of the lunches at Bradley's we all shared for years. It really seems like the end of an era knowing Dick is gone.

Please accept our deepest sympathy and condolences,

Judy (and MIke), Karen, Rocky and Ken Rosen

Having helped Dick with his computer, I had the utmost respect for him. He was frustrated but determined to accomplish what he wanted with the technology. He was the same era as my father and a Navy man. I am thankful he went peacefully and extend my condolences to Evelyn and the rest of the family. Kate Wolman - Computer Training -
