Ulrich von Brockdorff Obituary
Passed away October 10, 2003 in Pasadena, California, at the age of 96. Ulrich was born in Bregenz, Austria, on March 22, 1907. He received a B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Engineering Academy, Wismar, Germany in 1932. Thereafter, he held important positions at Osram Mfg. Co and Siemens-Halske Co., both in Berlin. Coming to the United States in 1954, he held executive positions at Magnetic Research Corporation and Actron Industries until his retirement in 1972. He is survived by his devoted wife, Margarita Fastabend von Brockdorff and by his loving stepdaughters, Dorothea Purdy and Johana Smith. Services will be held on Saturday, October 25th at 11:00 am at Cabot and Sons Chapel, 300 N. Fair Oaks Ave., Pasadena. Contributions in his memory may be made to Pasadena City College.

Ulrich Cay von Brockdorff is my grandfather. I called him Opi which is German for grandfather. My Opi was an inspiration to me while I was growing up and to all who knew him. He was a very charismatic man who had a zest for life like no other. He took up down-hill skiing in his early seventies. He owned and sailed his boat into his early ninties. He was always so smart and kind to me. It's true that Opi technically was the step-father of my mother Johanna and her sister Dorothea but in reality was the father who raised them from an impressionable age of 10 and 14. He has been in their lives for over 65 years and in mine for over 46 years. I'm sure the most challenging of times were those years spent in Germany during World War II. With his ingenuity and spirit he and his whole family servived the war and went on to come to the United States and lead productive lives. After the death of my grandmother Ilse von Brockdorff, my grandfather married a brillant and independant woman, Margarita Fastabend who for over 30 years has been his love and soulmate. She and Opi have shared the same zest for life, travelling, skiing, sailing and visiting friends. Towards the end she endured much in caring for Opi. We appreciate and thank her so much for her devotion to him and her love and kindness towards us.
