Sara Sullivan Obituary

Sara J. Sullivan was born to Elizabeth B. and James C. Jones on October 22, 1920 in Watkinsville, Georgia. She earned a bachelors degree from the University of Georgia and retired after a 19 year career with the Las Cruces Public Schools as a Special Education teacher.

Sara and Darrell Sullivan were married in 1942. They had three children- John Sullivan of Mesilla, Kathryn English of Pearland, TX, and Elizabeth Stinson of Warner-Robins, GA. Along with her children, Sara is survived by six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell, and her parents.
Sara has been a resident of Good Samaritan Village since 2001. She passed away there on March, 12, 2008. Services will be held in the chapel at Good Samaritan Village, 3025 Terrace Drive, at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, March 17.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to University Terrace Good Samaritan Village or a charity of your choice.

State Representative J. Paul Taylor writes about Sara:

"Sara Sullivan first came into my life in 1956 as the parent of her three children when I was principal of Alameda Elementary School. At that time, Sara's greatest interests were the progress of her children in school and how she could enhance the school with her regular presence.
Always positive and with a smile, Sara left me with a long-time memory of how a good parent can enhance the lives of their children and the atmosphere of the school setting. After I left Alameda Elementary, Sara went on to become an excellent Special Education teacher at Alameda Junior High where she stayed until her retirement. As a school administrator, I worked with Sara as she moved on from the elementary school to working with children who truly needed, loved, and respected her.

After Sara's retirement, she remained the same exuberant person, speaking of the merits of her three children and her general interest in the life of the Mesilla Community. I still recall Sara attending trustee meetings where she always presented constructive ideas in the early stages of the Mesilla town formation.

Sara was a dynamic person, full of cheer and caring for others as she had cared for her own children, the students at Alameda Elementary, Alameda Junior High, and the Town of Mesilla. I have always said that my best professional days were at the elementary level where students were great, parents were helpful, and the school atmosphere was ideal. Sara Sullivan was one of those who made those years so satisfying for me.
Sadly, those days have come to an end with the loss of a wonderful parent who influenced the school and her children, and eventually moved on to other things. But the good memories were made, and one of those great memories is Sara Sullivan. It is people like Sara Sullivan who leave an indelible mark on the people she touched, the students she touched, and the individuals she leaves behind."

In some odd way, I believe I have known Mrs. Sullivan all my life. Do we not all have a Sara Sullivan in our lives? Or have meet or seen or smelled or felt the presence of this special spirit? I believe I have and the children of this woman have to be especially proud to have shared her with all of us. God is good all the time, even though we think He is not sincerely involved, He really really is. Bless you family and my dear friends John and Barbara. Peace be unto you. Clarke and Cynthia.

I have wonderful memories of your mom. I was secretary at AJHS. She had many stories about her kids and grandkids. She was a wonderful person. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this very difficult time.

John, Katherine, and Elizabeth....thanks for sharing your Mom with so many of us kids. She made a lasting and happy impression on us, and I think it was simply because she was always just her natural self. We could tell she liked working with us, and that gave her a special place in our hearts. I'm glad of the chance to have known her, and enjoyed her genuine southern charm.

Kathy and Liz,
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your Mom. I smile at the thought of her and your Dad walking hand in hand now. Know that I am praying for both of you as you begin to heal from the loss of someone so great as your Mother.

Virginia and I are so sad to learn of the death of Sara. She was such a warm, generous, and gracious person who always had a welcoming smile for everyone. Everytime I see a weeping mulberry tree, I think of Darrell and Sara and of what a wonderful couple they were. We send our deepest condolences to the Sullivan children and grandchildren. New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, and New Mexico were blessed by the presence and accomplishments of Sara and Darrell.... John and Virginia Owens
