George Unger Obituary

George E. Unger, 87, of Rimersburg, died Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Clarion Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Born August 10, 1928, in Tidal, he was the son of Charles and Gertrude (Leech) Unger.

Mr. Unger was a lifetime resident of the area and attended Tidal schools.

He honorably served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Unger worked in the mold shop at Owens Illinois Glass Plant for 25 years until his retirement. He also drove truck for C&K Coal Company and for many years drove the No. 11 school bus for Union School District.

He married Gertrude E. Unger on August 1, 1958. She preceded him in death on February 2, 2016.

Mr. Unger was a member of St. Richard's Roman Catholic Church.

He enjoyed caring for his dogs, Penny and Peaches. Spending time with his grandchildren was one of his favorite things and he always looked forward to having a cold PBR with his grandsons. Mr. Unger was known for saying, "Any free beer is a good one" and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include two sons, William Johnston and his wife, Doris, of Rimersburg, and John Unger and his wife, Tina, of New Bethlehem; three daughters, Sue Hollingsworth and her husband, David, of Rimersburg, Deborah Kahle and her husband, Dale, of Limestone, and Tracy Dunkle of Rimersburg; 22 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Rose Mary Golla of South Carolina; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Rick Johnston; son-in-law, Don Myers; a great-grandson, Matt Grube; eight brothers, Sam, Fred, Leo, Dave, Jim, Charles, Joseph and Cyril Unger; and five sisters, Josephine Unger, Gertrude Conner, Adeline Dunkle, Geraldine Unger and Pauline Claypool.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 9, and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 10, at the Bauer-Hillis Funeral Home in Rimersburg.

A blessing service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 10, 2016, at the funeral home, with the Rev. William Kuba as celebrant.

Military honors will be presented by American Legion Post 454 and VFW Post 7132.

Interment will be in Cedarview Memorial Park, Strattanville.
