Roger Luby Obituary

Roger K. Luby

Bennington NH - Roger K Luby, 76, of Bennington, passed away on April 16, 2023 at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, NH after beating the odds for decades following a battle with heart disease. He was born on April 29, 1946 in Framingham, MA to parents George and Minnie Luby and grew up in Wellesley, MA, the youngest of four brothers. His father worked for the Cabot and Bradley families which brought the Luby's to the Monadnock region frequently, a place that Roger fell in love with from a young age and where the family spent their summers.

Meeting in 1965 at Cannon Mountain, he married Nancy Nordman in 1970, and for 19 years, they resided in Hancock, NH. They had two children, Scott and Christine, and he started Earth Artisans Landscaping, to fit around his lifelong passion, skiing. He was a B racer on the New England circuit, started skiing Tuckerman's Ravine in high school and was on the back cover of Skiing Magazine in 1976, photographed blasting through a cloud of powder on the snowfields of Snowbird. Skiing was ultimate freedom for Roger and he worked at ski areas in NH, northern VT and the Rockies, as Instructor, Ski Patrol and Mountain Manager. After the separation in 1989, Roger moved to Bennington, to work and live at Crotched Mountain where he was the property manager for the Mountainside Condo Association.

Roger had a knack for bringing people together and was the life of the party. A natural storyteller, he was generous and loyal, his friends were like his family and he created community wherever he went. He never met a dog he didn't like and had many beloved pets over the years. A lifelong antique collector, Roger had a story for every piece he acquired and enjoyed tennis, golf and travel in his earlier years.

The highlight of his year was an annual trip to Lake Albanel in Quebec, a 14 hour drive north, with his trusty Lund boat in tow. There, he'd convene with his tribe of fellow fisherman at a remote campsite on the banks of the barely melted lake for ten days of serious trout fishing and living off the land. He had some of the best times of his life there and had endless stories about the majestic brook trout and precarious predicaments they'd inevitably get themselves into.

He was predeceased by his brother Warren Luby and his wife Pat of Wolfboro, NH and Marco Island, FL He is survived by his brothers Ralph of York, ME and Robert of Bedford, NH and their wives Sue and Pam; his children, Scott Luby of Salt Lake City, UT and Christine Luby of Los Angeles, CA; and 8 nieces and nephews. Roger also enjoyed cooking and was an excellent chef!
He frequently hosted dinners for his firends and neighbors. Roger loved going to Boston to see the Red Sox, but he always asked to leave a little bit early to pick ingredients and foods only found in ChinaTown.
He will be missed by his many friends and pets.

Thanks Roger, for all those unforgettable moments together on Albanel lake. Some of the greatest moments in my life. I'll never forget. Have good time, in the paradise of fishermen and, keep us a few fish for when we'll meet up there.
Your friend, Éric.

A good friend of mine. We shared many an afternoon over a glass of wine. He led an interesting life and had so many stories to tell - about skiing, about Albanel, etc. RIP Roger.

I believe Roger´s energy will live on at his beloved mountain, in the buds of spring, the scent of fresh cut grass in summer, in the crisp colors of autumn and if we look closely, we may catch a glimpse of Roger smiling as he barrels down the slopes in winter. He´ll always be among us.

I did not know Roger personally, but know his daughter, Christine, and the love they shared as family. I have no doubt that he felt blessed to have had time together as he made this transition. Thinking of the entire family as they navigate this difficult time. Sending best wishes and condolences.

I want to express my deepest sympathy to Roger's family. I appreciated how kind and helpful he was to me numerous times. I will miss waving and saying hello to him as he was going up and down the road by my condo. I'll also miss saying hello to him out on his deck when hiking by his place .

I am glad I got to know you and your love of Crotched Mountain.
