Alan Frederick Neidle, age 80 of Upper St. Clair PA, formerly of Washington DC, died April 3, 2010 after a brief illness. He is remembered for his devotion to his wife, Diana, and for his passion for politics, music and literature. The son of Cecyle and Marks Neidle, he is survived by his sister, Enid Neidle; children, Elizabeth and Louise Neidle; and grandchildren, Sinead Keogh, Brenna Keogh, and Alan Neidle-Bakkila. Born in New York City, he lived in New York, Northern Virginia, Washington DC and Pittsburgh. After receiving his B.A. from Yale University in 1950, Alan served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1950-1953. In 1956, he received an L.L.B from the University of Michigan Law School, where he met his wife, Diana. Alan Neidle served for 24 years in the U.S. Dept. of State and the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency. He participated in treaty negotiations; including those to prevent militarization of Antarctica, to prohibit testing of nuclear weapons in the atmosphere, to prevent proliferation of nuclear weapons, to ban biological weapons, and to achieve a comprehensive ban on nuclear testing. He was a member of the U.S. delegation to the U.N. General Assembly, and later became the director of policy planning for U.S. participation in the U.N. Following government service, he was appointed Tom Slick Professor of World Peace in the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas. After leaving the University, Alan had leadership roles in special conferences and publications related to arms control and disarmament. Alan was an accomplished writer and avid reader. His published fiction includes Fables for a Nuclear Age and Fairbodies vs the Fanatics. Alan also pursued a love of music throughout his life; he was a talented pianist, who studied and wrote about music. He published an article on classical music in the Washington Quarterly in 1995. At the time of his death, Alan was working on a novel based on Beethoven's life. Friends and relatives will be welcomed at Friendship Village for a memorial service on Tuesday April 20, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. 1290 Boyce Road, Upper Saint Clair, PA.
