SOUTHWOOD, Alan David
Alan David Southwood born December 6, 1920 passed away peacefully on December 11, 2016 with his family by his side.
Survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Catherine; two children, Dale (Shirley) and Craig; six grandchildren, Steven (Martena), Heather, Dan, Alexandra, Kate, and Roy; one great-grandson, Louis. He is survived by his brother Ken Southwood (Pat) and his sister Peggy Cliffe. Predeceased by his mother Emmie, his father Joseph, his brother, Herbert and brother-in-law, Fred Cliffe.
Born in Tredeger, Wales, he immigrated to Canada with his family in 1926 to Drumheller, Alberta. The family moved to Calgary where he finished school. He served overseas in World War II from 1939 until 1945: travelling by ship to England and serving throughout Northern Africa, Sicily, Italy, and ending in the Netherlands.
He was employed at Royalite Oil (later Gulf) as an accountant and then worked as a Landman after retiring from Gulf. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking and carpentry. He built two homes after his retirement and always talked of doing one more. He was always active outdoors and remained in excellent health all his life - downhill skiing into his 80's and was still golfing regularly last summer.
His family would like to thank all the health care workers who did so much for Alan during this difficult time.
As per his wishes there will not be a memorial service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
