Sandy MacDonald passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 in Calgary after a brief illness. Sandy was a proud and loyal Cape Bretoner. He was a graduate of both St. Francis Xavier University and Gonzaga University. His career in education took him to Halifax, Labrador City and Kingston prior to his 26-year employment with the Calgary Separate School Board, primarily at St. Francis High School. As well as being an avid hockey fan, Sandy played hockey all his life starting on the pond in Judique through to the Calgary Old Timers Hockey Association. He also took great pleasure in gardening. Sandy was an active member of the Dalhousie Community coaching both hockey and baseball as well as being a Beaver Cub leader. He was an active member of St. Luke's Catholic Church. Sandy is survived by his wife of 48 years, Janet, and their children Nancy (Joe Lizotte), Trevor (Ena Kano) and Danny as well as by grandchildren Elizabeth, Emily and Charlotte Lizotte, and Alasdair and Sarah MacDonald. He was predeceased by his parents Willie and Jessie and brother Donald. He is survived by sisters Peggy, Christina and Marie as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Luke's Catholic Church (Corner of Northland Drive and Northmount Drive NW) on Friday, December 2, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Photos, memories and condolences may be shared with the family through www.evanjstrong.com. I worked with Sandy at St. Francis HS on the Public Speaking and Debate. He was a devoted teacher and was always a pleasure to work with. What a professional and truly a wonderful man!

SO Sorry for your loss. I remember meeting Sandy and Janet at the Holiday Inn in Calgary in 1996. MY husband Sandy and I were good friends of Marie and Jack MacDonald from Buffalo. PLease accept my deepest sympathy. I'll remember Sandy and the family in my prayers. Anne Wilson

Janet and family, I will never forget the week we spent together in October! To have been able to share this time with my brother and his amazing family was a true gift. Life will never again,be the same for any of us. I know he is with the Lord, probably telling stories❤

Dear Janet and Family,
Janice and I are very sorry to hear that Sandy has passed away. I have very fond memories of Sandy at both Holy Cross and St. Francis.I especially loved listening to his animated stories about his life as a Cape Brettoner, spoken with the authentic accent of a true 'Caper'. Many staffroom discussions pertained to sports and his passion for hockey. May you find comfort in the many memories you created together and in the support and love you have in each other. You are in our prayers.

"Axe Handle" was a private nickname Sandy and I had for him. Whenever I thought of him over the years, so many times, "Axe Handle" would come to mind and I would smile. For me, it says more than all the condolences and sympathy I can muster which I send to Janet and family for their loss, the extent of which only they could know. At one time he said (paraphrase): "When the sands of time slip through my fingers, I hope they will sparkle and be white." The world was indeed a better place....

Very sad news. I remember Mr. MacDonald as my coach on several childhood sports teams, as a guidance counselor at my high school, and a valuable family friend for many years.
