Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 7, 2000.

SCOTT, Arthur Benjamin
On Sunday, November 5, 2000 at St. Catharines General Hospital in his 87th year. A graduate of the University of Toronto in engineering and architecture in 1939, his professional career spanned 60 years, during which he designed and supervised the construction of more than 150 public buildings. These buildings, primarily in the Niagara Peninsula, included 50 churches and 50 schools. As a youth, Mr. Scott was an outstanding athlete, setting track records in high school, capturing intercollegiate honours as a wrestler and football player and, briefly, playing halfback for the Ottawa Roughriders of the CFL. During the war, Mr. Scott held the rank of captain with the Army Engineers in Brockville, instructing in munitions and explosives. A life-long advocate of local heritage and the environment, Mr. Scott was instrumental in creating the St. John's Outdoor Education Centre with the Niagara South Board of Education. Later, he made his property available to the St. John's Centre, a nonprofit corporation that carries on his vision of preserving heritage buildings, conserving the environment and providing educational opportunities for students in Niagara. Mr. Scott is survived by his wife, Marilyn and his 11 children: Peter (Hazel) of Welland, Anne (Jean Claude) of Southampton, John (Susan) of St. Johns, Tom (Joyce) of Ottawa, Helen of Cambridge, Kathie of St. Catharines, Jay of Grimsby, George of Wainfleet, Mary Beth (Chris) of Nobleton, David (Kathy) of Laskay and Karin of Toronto. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren and his great-grandson. He was predeceased by his first wife France Darte and his second wife Maureen Megannety. He is survived by his sister Ruth Prophet of Port Colborne. Cremation has taken place. Friends will be received at J.J. PATTERSON & SONS FUNERAL RESIDENCE 19 Young Street, Welland on Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. and on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Alexander's Church on Friday morning at 11 o'clock. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to the Alzheimer's Society of Niagara or St. Johns Centre Inc.
