Banice Webber Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 5 to Jun. 7, 2020.
Webber, Dr. Banice Mordecai
Banice Mordecai Webber, 94, died Wednesday May 27th, 2020 peacefully at his home, at Brookdale Battery Park in NYC, from complications relating to Parkinson's.
Banice Webber was born in Providence, RI on June 26, 1925, the only son of Joseph and Sarah Olch Webber. His younger sister, Judith Webber Meiselman, died in 2013. He attended Brown University and graduated from Tufts Medical School in 1947. He trained as a surgeon, like his father, and later in his medical career went on to become a Radiation Oncologist ultimately founding Radiation Oncology Associates in Providence, RI.
He married three times, to Helen Ross Webber (1952-1962), Sherry Polan Webber (1963-1999), and Marie Clarke (2014-2016). He is survived by his two daughters, Rachel Webber Ryser of Brooklyn NY, and Susan Webber Gatto of NYC and Park City, Utah; their spouses, Scott Ryser and James Gatto, and 4 grandchildren, Samuel Joel Ryser, Nina Sarah Ryser, Alexander Webber Gatto and Owen Edward Gatto. His two sons, Joel Benjamin Webber and Daniel Saul Webber predeceased him.
Banice served his country entering the Army in June 1943 prior to attending Tufts Medical School and was sent to Korea in 1952 as an Army surgeon. He was a Fellow in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Tufts New England Medical Center, an Attending Radiation Oncologist at Rhode Island Hospital, and a Member of the Brown University Medical School faculty. He was a Clinical Associate Professor Emeritus of Radiation Medicine at Brown University and an Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology at Tufts University School of Medicine. His long and distinguished medical career included stints as President New England Cancer Society, President New England Society of Radiation Oncology, President Miriam Hospital Staff Association, a Trustee of Miriam Hospital, Chairman Mediation Committee Rhode Island Medical Society, and Member of the Board of Trustees of Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island. In addition, he authored and published numerous medical papers and articles. He retired in 2003 and in his later years tutored 4th and 5th grade children at the Paul Cuffee School, which he loved dearly.
A lifelong sailing enthusiast, photographer, intrepid traveler and occasional musician among many other interests, Banice loved clams, oysters, mussels and chowder almost as much as he loved the summer. His many friends, colleagues and patients were all familiar with his deep intellect, endless curiosity, sharp wit and humor. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, parent, delighted grandparent and above all, a man of science, who honored the traditions but charted his own path.
World circumstances have forced postponement of a funeral/memorial service. Eventually he will be buried in Providence, RI at Sons of Israel and David Cemetery. Donations will be gratefully accepted in his name at The American Cancer Society.

Dr. Webber was an amazing man! He was so loved by the students at Paul Cuffee. He did science projects, bought books and taught the kids about the world. Many of the students did not have grandparents- they were so in awe of him. He definitely has earned his place in heaven.Robin Yabroudy- Special Educator / Paul Cuffee Charter School

To the Webber Family,

My sincerest condolences on your dads passing. I had the honor of working with this kind, intelligent, warm individual. I had the utmost respect for him and can honestly say he was a true professional. His quick wit and wonderful sense of humor will be remembered. His clam bakes at Haffenraffer Farm were always a delight for my family and staff.
He always was a caring father figure and a real gentleman. Rest In Peace

My condolences to Rachel, Sue and the entire Webber family.

I have known Banice for most of my life. I sliced my thumb with a wood carving tool when I was about 15. It was a Friday night, and Banice rushed to the hospital and stitched me up. A few years later he took out my appendix. I remember how scared I was (both times) and how Banice calmed me down with jokes and his calm demeanor.

I will always remember holiday parties at the Wermer house when Banice would come over. Even though I was just a kid, Banice would always talk with me and the other kids as if we were equals. He didn't just make small talk; he actually took an interest in us, and listened. How many people do that?

When my mother and Banice got together, i was very happy. They made an incredibly cute couple, and Banice loved my mother (Marie Clarke) very much.

Banice wasn't just smart; he was also wise, kind and compassionate.

He was also ridiculously generous. Every time my wife (LaDoris) and I visited him in New York he took us out to dinner, and he usually refused to let us pay.

I have so many good memories of Banice. He was such a fun guy.

I will really miss him.

My condolence to the entire Webber family. I had the pleasure & honor to work with Dr Webber right out of school as a radiation therapist. He had recently opened his private practice.
Dr Webber lead by example, showing respect for his staff & patients. I have tried to carry this trough my career of 43 years as a radiation therapist. He was a true family man & he loved seeing all the children at his summer parties at Haffenreffer Farms.
I am forever grateful & he will never be forgotten. Thank you Dr Webber.

Dr. Webber was one of a kind! I loved him. He starting volunteering in my Special Education classroom back when he was 80 years old and didn't stop until he moved to NY. He loved the children, and they just thought he was the most amazing "grandfather" in the world. Dr. Webber brought so much happiness and "awe" everytime he came in. I remember setting up some work for him to do with the students- his response was very honest- :) " That's too boring,I'll bring my own". And he did... he bought books for his reading groups, made lively science experiments with the boys, brought in his fossils from his rock collection, showed them his X-rays and always taught them about life outside of Providence. He used the globe and internet to share stories about the world. He even entertained them with mythical stories of the Gods. Dr. Webber became a true inspiration and friend. I enjoyed having dinner with him and Marie at Laraulmead - which became a semi-annual tradition. He was truly a remarkable man. Sadly, we lost touch (save a few emails) when he moved. However, I know that he was blessed to be with his family. If possible, I would love to be invited to his funeral. I have beautiful memories.

My sincere sympathy to Dr. Webbers family, daughters Rachel and Sue and his grandchildren whom I know he loved spending time with.
I worked with Dr. Webber from 1991 until his retirement and had the utmost respect for him. As a RN he taught me more about caring for people than I ever learned in school.
He was one of the smartest and more importantly wisest men I will ever meet and will ever have the pleasure to work with.
Because of him, I advance my career and am now a Nurse Practitioner with my Doctorate in Nursing and I will always remember Webbers 4 Rules.

Banice was a magical and surprising last act for our mother (his wife), Marie, a loved and loving grandfather for our two sons, Carl and Justin, and a dear friend for us. Our lives were intertwined from Helene's early childhood when he took out her brother Andrew's appendix, but the bond grew far deeper with a love letter 20 years ago that brought Marie and Banice together. We forged our own family memories with Banice during summers in Touisset, New Year's Eve parties at Laurelmead, Kinky Boots, Jersey Boys and Wicked at the Providence Performing Arts Center, and game after game of quarters across the dinner table. All deaths are a time of transition and remembrance, and Banice's death brings us back as well to the death of our mother, for whom he made the last fifteen years of life so precious. He will be sorely missed.

To Banice and Family,

I was very saddened to learn of his passing
as he played such a large role in life and my now 30 year career
as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon here in Providence, RI

Banice as a member admissions committee at Brown University Medical School had the confidence in me at a you age to grant admission so as
to start my medical journey. In treating more than 30,000 patients
I often thought of Banice and how grateful I was for the confidence
he had in me.
He started as a surgeon. When I was voted Top Doc in plastic surgery by a local magazine I wanted to show him, and thank him for
the opportunity to serve patients in my home state and make a difference.
He became a roll model and a friend as we gathered in the Attleboro
ski club lodge with other friends.
Banice, with every stitch I place please know that it is an honor to you
and the confidence you had in my future abilities and contribution to society.
I can never thank you enough.
May God bless you !

Sincerely,

David T. Barrall MD

I have known Dr. Banice Webber for a short period of time during my radiation oncology fellowship at RI hospital back in 1978-9. He was an excellent teacher and an outstanding clinician, but above all - a rare kind of gentleman, that you can hardly find these very says..

Banice and Sherry were good friends of my parents, Sid and Ellen Rollins, and I have fond memories of your dad entertaining the folks around our dinner table. Dad also enjoyed knowing Banice and Marie at Laurelmead. Sad to hear this news, and glad that you had some time to have him near you.
