King, Bernard J. SCHENECTADY Bernard J. King, 90, of Schenectady, passed away early Sunday morning, October 23, 2011. Born Bernard J. Czar kowski in Schen ectady on April 15, 1921, he was the son of the late Adam J. and Veronica (nee: Bosinska) Czarkowski. Bernie was raised and educated in Schenectady and a graduate of Nott Terrace High School. He went on to graduate from General Electric Co.'s Tool and Dye Apprentice Program. During World War II he was a United States Navy Pilot flying blimps on sub patrol throughout the Caribbean. In August of 1945, Bernie married Betty Floyd Platto of Schenectady and had two sons, Donald and Robert. After the War, Bernie and his brother, Victor established King Paving Corp., and later King Road Materials Inc. in Schenectady. As president of the companies that service the Capital Region's highway, streets and bridges, the brothers owned and operated the two companies until selling them in 1986. Bernie along with his brother Victor, Americanized their last name to King in 1949 for business reasons. Bernie and Victor were also partners in Lake George RV Park until Bernie retired in 1987. Bernie was past president of the Mohawk Golf Club, was an avid golfer and enjoyed annual winter trips south with the Pinehurst Pirates. Bernie sat on the Board of Directors of Trustco Bank for over 20 years until 1993. He was also a former active member of Kiwanis. In 1993, Bernie was predeceased by his wife, Betty. Bernie is survived by his two sons, Donald J. King of Bolton Landing and Robert H. King and his wife, Charlotte Anne Briggs of Clifton Park; his four grandchildren, Taylor King and his wife Heather of Berwyn, Pa.; Lauren King of Park City, Utah and Annie and Emily King of Clifton Park; his four great-grandchildren, Chase Romero, Griffin and Parker King and Tadi Knowles; his brother, Victor King and his wife Jessica of Lake George, N.Y. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 4 until 8 p.m. at Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State St., Schenectady. Funeral services are private and will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Memory Gardens, Colonie. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Alzheimer's Association of Northeastern NY, 4 Pine West Plaza, Suite 405, Albany, NY 12205 and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 15 Tech Valley Dr., Suite 4, East Greenbush, NY 12061. Whwn I say the name Bernie King a warmth comes over my body and memories flood the air. B.K. was a personal treasure which I will always hold dear. He was a gentleman, a friend, a mentor, a role model. and a leader. I will remember him for all my days.
