Chad Richard Reid, 56, died February 18, 2020, at his home in Cedar City, Utah. His final days were spent surrounded by friends, family and his loving wife.
Chad was born on May 14, 1963, in Murray Utah to Paul and Pauline Reid. He was a dedicated and loving father, husband, brother and son. Although Chad led a life of many accomplishments and achievements, Chad was most fulfilled and at his happiest when spending time with his family. He valued time with his children above all else. Chad loved spending time fishing, hunting, camping, four wheeling and spending time in the outdoors.
His love for agriculture and community was evidenced by his many accomplishments and achievements. Chad earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and agriculture from SUU, and later a Master of Science degree in genetics from the University of Nevada Reno.
Chad worked as a Natural Resource/ Agricultural Extension Professor in Iron County for Utah State University, Range Area Agent for five Counties in Southern Utah, coordinator for Cedar Mountain Initiative and Adjunct Professor for Southern Utah University.
He was an active member of the Iron County Cattlemen Association, Iron County Weed Board, Utah Weed Board, Southwest Jr. Livestock Board, Utah Society of Range Management, and Chairman of the Cedar Livestock and Heritage Festival. Chad honored his community, farmers, and ranchers by establishing the Cedar Livestock and Heritage Festival. He loved sharing his passion for agriculture with his students through his work with the Southwest Jr. Livestock, Iron County FFA and 4-H programs. Chad was recently honored as the Grand Marshall for Cedar Livestock and Heritage Festival and Cedar City Man of the Year.
Chad was survived by his wife, Linda Dawn Sterling-Reid, Children Lance Reid and Cierra Reid of Cedar City, Utah, Parents Paul and Pauline Reid of Murray Utah, Siblings Ann (Rick) Petersen, Harvest, Alabama, Chris (Karen) Reid Cedar City, Utah, and Sherrie (Tom) Butterfield West Jordan, Utah, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on February 22, 2020, at 11:00 am at the Canyon View Stake Center (1985 North Main Street, Cedar City, Utah 84721). Viewings will be held on February 21, 2020, from 6:00 -8:00 pm and again on February 22, 2020, from 9:30 -10:30 am at the Canyon View Stake Center. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Iron County FFA or Iron County 4H Programs.

I am sorry to learn of Chad's passing. He was a great coworker, very competent and kept things interesting. I will always remember some of his stories and actions. We would all show up to events wearing ties and Chad without one; would say "Ties are for special events like a baptism". My heart goes out to your family and friends, may your faith sustain you until that glorious reunion in the eternities.

I became acquainted with Chad at the annual Range/Livestock Workshop AZ/UT through many years. I enjoyed Chad's personality. He was a fun loving man. He was a good presenter of agricultural and range research. He put it into a usable form for the field people. When he got up to present you knew you a good talk coming on.

Been about a month since you left us Chad. I have had a million thoughts about what I would like to tell you. I hope you know your life is grieved by many and will be for a long, long time. I still can't mentally get my brain to believe you have gone on to greener pastures. I'll just keep the good memories that come to mind as a blessing to have been your friend, in this earthly time. Grief makes it's own trail, and for many of us we are still lost.

I am a professor at USU and have worked with Chad on Cedar Mountain for several years. Chad had such a strong passion for the and people associated with the land - I learned so much from him about the cultural and ecological histories of Cedar Mountain, and that made my science better. I'm so sad that his time was cut short. I'm very grateful for the time I did have with him, taking many students on tours of Cedar Mountain with him and pondering causes and effects with respect to aspen forests there. I'll always be grateful for those trips and Chad's insights.

Chad is a great teacher, mentor, scientist and professional. He certainly had a passion for his vocation, his family and for anything agriculture. He had compassion as evidenced by his efforts to keep Jim Bowns involved and active. There definitely will be many more doves for the rest of us, than there were. He is a true friend of a sense of humor, education, agriculture, good science, common sense, and especially people. He has helped me learn and grow in knowledge of many things in the range management field. I have been fortunate enough to work with him since he came to Iron County and count myself as one of his friends. He will truly be missed by the community as well as the agricultural community. There is not a way to measure the impact he has had in all aspects of his life. I express my deepest sympathy to his family.

Chad was like a brother to me. When I arrived in Vernal, naive about my job in Extension, he took me under his wing and showed me the ropes. My heart is very heavy and sad at his passing. The silver lining in the sky is that he is now free from suffering. I'm sure he'll continue his great work somewhere in the heavens after he's had some rest and a few good fishing trips.
Linda, Thanks for your friendship too. We hope and pray that you, Lance and Cierra will find comfort and the strength to carry on.
Sincerely,
Boyd and Kathy

Friend, coworker, teacher, mentor and all around good man. I doubt there are noxious weeds in heaven but if there are they won't be there for long... There will be a hole that will be impossible to fill in the noxious weed, rangeland and extension community not to mention in the lives of everyone around him. Thoughts and prayers to family, friends and community.

Chad was a great mentor and friend to me as I started my career with Extension 20 years ago. He was passionate about his job. He always had a great joke to start off his extension presentations. He lived in the cutting edge of latest science based information. He had an amazing ability to identify plants of Utah/Arizona/Nevada. He will be missed. Prayers and love for his family

I met Chad when he started with USU Extension in Uintah County, and enjoyed working with him until my retirement from Extension in 2018. Chad embodied everything an Extension educator should be. He was also a great friend. Chad was extremely competent and totally dedicated. He helped a great many people and is simply irreplaceable.
Please accept our deepest sympathies. We will all miss Chad.

Chad was a fabulous man! I remember how great of friend he and my mom Susy Randall were. All the years in 4H he was always there helping and doing as needed. I'm sure there is a great reunion going on between him and my mom! She died when she was 56 as well. You will be greatly missed.

Chad was indeed a great man. Didnt matter who you were he took you under his wing to help you succeed. He was my go to guy for weeds and plants and never missed replying with the correct response even late in his fight. Im a better person because of Chad. He will be greatly missed in agriculture and extension. Thank you for being a great friend and mentor.

I thoroughly enjoyable my interactions with Chad Reid. He was always learning and had a practical mind. He also had the confidence to take the lead in what he thought needed to be done. I was honored to be able to serve with him as part of Utah State University Extension Service. The Agriculture Extension Agents had a loyal comradery that we all cherished. I am sorry to hear that he is gone. He truly made a difference in the lives of all who were privileged to work with him, his community and the Western States Agriculture Extension Association.

Chad was a great fiend and colleague. He loved to learn and was never afraid to challenge old ideas, but was patient when others needed more time to adjust. Chad had vision to see beyond the moment. Yet that vision didn't prevent him from seeing the needs of those often overlooked. His courage over the last year and a half was inspiring. I don't know why his time was cut short. Some day I'll ask him and he will patiently explain things in a way I can't misunderstand. That is Chad at his best. I pray his family will find peace as they cherish fond memories and anticipate wonderful reunions.
