Charles Nicholas Micarelli, of Maitland, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2013, at the age of 83. The son of Italian immigrants, he was born in Boston, Mass., in 1929. He earned a Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures at Boston University after having met his wife Sabina while both of them were Fulbright Scholars on their way to study in France. Charles taught for a time at what is now Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., before relocating in 1960 to the University of South Florida in Tampa, where he became Chairman of the Department of Foreign Languages. In 1967, he moved to the Orlando area to become one of the founding administrators of Florida Technological University, which today is the University of Central Florida. Until his retirement, he served in several administrative and teaching positions at UCF, including Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dean of Humanities and Fine Arts, Dean of Undergraduate Studies/Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Professor of Foreign Languages. He served in leadership roles and on the boards of directors of several arts organizations, including the Orlando Opera, the Florida Symphony, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, and PESO. He also was an avid philatelist and authored a book on the identification of U.S. postage stamps. He is survived by his wife Sabina (née Godfredson), his son Carl of New York, N.Y., and his son John of Winter Park. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, at Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home - East Altamonte Chapel, 994 E. Altamonte Dr. (Hwy. 436), Altamonte Springs, FL 32701, (407) 831-2031. The family will receive friends beginning at 5 p.m. that day at the funeral home. A reception will follow the service at Sheraton Orlando North Hotel, 600 N. Lake Destiny Dr., Maitland, FL 32751. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Parkinson Research Foundation.
