Charles 'Skip' Webster Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 13, 2008.
COOPERSTOWN _ Charles H. "Skip" Webster, 68, formerly of Cooperstown and more recently of Schenectady, died Sunday, March 9, 2008, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady.
Born May 21, 1939, in Oneonta, the son of Charles and Shirley (Hitchcock) Webster, he was raised in Cooperstown and was a member of Cooperstown Central School's class of 1958.
Charles enlisted in the United States Navy in 1958 and served his country at sea aboard several naval vessels. His last duty assignment was aboard the USS Somersworth, an experimental Naval patrol craft.
After his naval service "Skip," as he was known to most, entered the construction trade. Before long he owned and was operating his own roofing and miscellaneous carpentry business under the name "Craig Roofing." He repaired and/or replaced a number of roofs in the local area. Subsequently, Skip moved to and successfully operated his business in the Schenectady area, returning to the Cooperstown area many times over the years to help friends and former customers.
A "homebody," Skip loved watching "old-time movies," barbecuing, fly fishing, and vegetable gardening. He also had a passion for the game of baseball (especially Little League and youth baseball) and was himself equally happy playing or watching games.
Skip is survived by his companion of many years, Catherine Lighthall, of Schenectady; his daughter, Judith Ann Webster, of California; his three sons, Donald "Dan" Webster (Rhonda) of South Plymouth, Douglas Webster (Teresa) of Oneonta, and David Webster of Morris; as well as by his former daughter-in-law and close friend, Brenda Webster of Howes Cave. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.
A graveside service will be held in the spring in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.
The family suggests, for those who so desire, that donations be made to a local Little League organization in Skip's memory.
Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Skip’s family. Skip and I were cousins, and he was my closest friend during our childhood and teenage years. I felt blessed that we were able to stay in touch all the years since then. We never forgot how fortunate we were to grow up in Cooperstown and in that era. In later years, when he had to live with health problems, his spirit always stayed strong. I admired him for that. It was the same resolute strength he displayed when we were young – “let’s carry on, do the best we can, and be happy.” Smooth sailing, my friend.

I want to express my condolences to Skip’s family and friends. He was much present in our lives as we grew up, being a best friend of my big brother and a second cousin of ours. I have a wonderful picture of us all taken on Otsego Lake in about 1946. I’ll never forget your smile, Skip.
