David Leinster Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 7, 2016.
David Robert Leinster 81, of Westmoreland, NH, passed away peacefully at his home with his loving family at his side on Wednesday, August 3, 2016.

He was born in New Haven, CT on February 14, 1935, the son of Charles and Eunice (Houde) Leinster. He grew up in Branford, CT, attending local schools.

David was a member of the Naval Reserves, and following his graduation from Branford High School, he enlisted in the Navy, where he served from 1953 until 1956.

In 1956, he married Patricia Harlow Neal, and the couple shared 60 years together until his passing.

Following his discharge from the Navy, he attended Southern Connecticut University and the University of Bridgeport, where he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. His graduate work was completed at the University of Connecticut.

In 1966, David joined the faculty of Keene State College as a history professor. While there, he served the college on several committee appointments, as well as serving as head of the History Department for several years. In addition, he received the Distinguished Teacher Award in 1990, and the New Hampshire Professor of the Year Award in 1991. His greatest joy in his teaching career was mentoring and guiding many first-generation college students. David retired from Keene State in 1998.

Over the years, David enjoyed sailing, first in Connecticut and later in the waters off Rhode Island. He and his wife, Patricia, had several memorable trips to Europe, but their annual trip to Cape Cod, starting in the 1950's, was always a highlight of special vacations spent as a family. Time spent with his grandchildren was especially meaningful, as they were 'his heart's delight.'

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Patricia (Neal) Leinster, of Westmoreland; three daughters, Anne Windham, her husband, Ryder, and their two daughters, Dorothy Margit and Violet Ruth, of Providence RI, Chaipel Leinster and her partner, Mitch Gowans, of Providence, and Katherine O'Connor, her husband, Rob, and their children, William Denis and Claire Katherine, of Keene, NH; a sister, Janet Brinton of Bethany, CT and her children, Robert, Garrett, Heather and William; as well as cousins, Frederick and Michael Houde; and Mary Alice (Houde) Howley of CT. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Charles Leinster, of Clinton, CT.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at 11:00AM in St. Margaret Mary Church, 33 Arch Street, Keene. Family and friends are invited to call on Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00PM at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene.

A committal service with military honors will be held on Wednesday, August 10th at 1:00PM in the Branford Center Cemetery, 175 Montowese Street, Branford, CT.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Leinster's memory to the Historical Society of Cheshire County, PO Box 803, Keene, NH 03431-0803.

I was saddened to hear of David's passing. I always enjoyed having interesting conversations with him at the boatyard. It was a history lesson that I truly enjoyed. It was my pleasure to have known him.

I was sorry to have just learned of Professor Leinster's passing. He was, without a doubt, the most influential professor of my undergraduate education. I do not think I would have completed my degree in History had it it not been for his influence. I enjoyed each and every class of his that I took. He brought history alive in spectacular ways. I will always associate my days at KSC with Professor Leinster. God speed to a gracious, kind and thoughtful man and condolences to his family.

I am heartbroken to hear of Professor Leinster's passing. An exemplary educator who was beloved by his students. David, I will never forget the positive impact you had on my formation as an anxious young woman entering the professional world. Your friendship and mentorship given to me through the years has been a blessing. May the peace and consolation of our Lord be with Pat, your girls and entire family. Looking forward to the day when we are all together in our Father's home. Love, Catherine Ramsden Coughlin

I was saddened to hear of Dr. Leinster's passing when I read the KSC Alumni magazine. He was a wonderful man and teacher; a gentleman of grace and humility. His teaching was a foundation for my love of medieval history and, ironically, coursework for him also constituted an early renewal of faith. He made learning and the past come alive in his classes. I look to him as one of my early mentors and I can't recall how many times I've relayed stories to others of my student interactions with him. He truly made everything about his classes enjoyable and he was a professor who inspired students to work hard for him. Thank you Dr. Leinster for all that you gave to every class and every student.

I will never forget Professor Leinster's class; I came in late and he knew my name and called me out. I appreciate his kindness and respect, in a time when I wasn't sure where I fit in. I have great memories of his class; his enthusiasm made me proud to be part of Keene State College. Thank you, Patricia Cassin Warach

David was an inspiration for me as a student and my role model for how to be a teacher. In more recent years, he helped direct me with my historical research and writing. He will be greatly missed. My condolences to Pat and his family.

David was a mentor to me when I was his student in the 1960s and later a friend and neighbor. What I will always value about him was his passion for books and learning. David was a great talker, but he never talked about himself. His subject was always the book he was reading. I never stopped learning him. I will miss him.

So sorry to learn of David's passing. He was my teacher and advisor while I attended KSC. I spent long hours in his office talking to him about history. He filled my head with the joy of learning, and inspired me to pursue my education. I'll never forget him.
