DONALD JAMES CHEAL FLEMING D.F .C., BSC METALLURGY QUEEN'S, B.A. HISTORY TRENT, P ENG . Died at Peterborough Regional Health Centre, Hospital Drive on October 18, 2006 in his 84th year. Beloved and devoted husband of Margaret for 57 years. Loving and supportive father and inspiration for James Fleming (Carol) and Pamela McKendrick (Stuart). Proud grandfather of Douglas McKendrick, Sonja Storey-Fleming, Emily McKendrick, Laura Storey-Fleming and Brian Storey-Fleming. Donald served during WWII in the R.C.A.F. Bomber Command, R.A.F. Squadron 103, and was recently inducted into the Canadian Hall of Valour. After returning from the war, Donald earned an engineering degree at Queen's which led to a challenging career in metallurgy. While at Queen's he met Margaret, the love of his life. He was a member of the Avro Arrow engine design team and a pioneer in Canadian Nuclear Power at G.E. Canada. He was a member and Past President of the Fortnightly Club, and of Peterborough United Services Institute, member Probus Club of Peterborough and served on the Peterborough Public Library Board for many years. Donald was a life-long learner and avid historian, who earned his degree in History during retirement. He enjoyed extensive world travel, bridge, theatre and, in former years, skiing and sailing. Special thanks to Dr. John Beamish for his exceptional compassion and care in recent years and to the staff of the Intensive Care Unit for bringing comfort to Donald during his stay in hospital. A funeral will be held at St. John's Anglican Church, 99 Brock Street, Peterborough at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 23rd with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Venerable Gordon Finney and Archdeacon Keith McKean will officiate. Interment to follow at Little Lake Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations in memory of Donald may be made to Trent University.
