Donald Vosburgh Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 10, 2013.
Donald R. Vosburgh, professor emeritus at Hartwick College and a veteran of World War II, died Saturday at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital after a brief stay. He was 91.

Vosburgh taught sociology and classes in other social science disciplines for 37 years, the last 29 at Hartwick. He started the college's sociology department and was named as the Margaret Bunn outstanding teacher in 1985. In 1992, he received the Meritorious Service Award.

"I cannot imagine having chosen any other line of work," he said at the time. "It would be my hope that young people about to launch their careers might be able to say, at the time of their retirement, as I did, 'I believe that I made the most rewarding choice.'"

He began his career in 1955 with a teaching position at Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, W.V. He also spent five years at Elizabethtown College, in Elizabethtown, Pa., where he taught and served as an interim dean.

A resident of Oneonta for 50 years, he was born in the Fulton County community of Vail Mills, N.Y., a son of Ralph E. and Nellie C. (Hyde) Vosburgh. He graduated from the high school in neighboring Broadalbin, N.Y., where his family had moved, and was elected senior class president.

In September, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. After basic and specialized radio training in New York City, Fort Dix, N.J., Camp Crowder, Mo., Fort Monmouth, N.J. and Camp Miles Standish, Mass., he was shipped to the European Theater on July 5, 1944.

During the war, he served with the 121st Signal Radio Intelligence Co. in England, France and Belgium. He then served with the Army Security Agency of Europe in Germany.

After returning to Broadalbin, he married the girl next door, Elsie R. Daggett, on Jan. 15, 1949. Two years later, with the help of the G.I. Bill, he earned a bachelor's degree in public relations from Utica College. Syracuse University awarded him a master's degree in journalism in 1953 and a doctorate in social sciences in 1958.

His affiliations and memberships included the United Methodist Church in Oneonta, the Masonic Lodge – Kennyetoo #599, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Republican Party.

He was a charter member of the ROMEOs (retired old men eating out), a luncheon group of Hartwick retirees.

His wife died in 1997. His only brother, Edward H. Vosburgh, died in 1982.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and JoAnn (Benson) Vosburgh of Hudson, Ohio; and his daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Thomas Anthony of Waldwick, N.J..

Friends are invited to call at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, N.Y., on Sunday, Sept. 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. Remarks from friends will commence at 3 p.m.

Sorry to hear of D.R.'s death. We Bud and Nancy Breen had stayed in touch with and visited Don in Oneonta from our home in Canastota. Also visits at Martha's Vineyard. We have many boyhood memories of life on Bridge Street in Broadalbin, NY. Our thoughts and blessings to the families of Don and may gods love and peace be with you.

Dear Mark and Melanie,

My mother, Alice Odell, worked with Dr. Vosburgh, at Hartwick College. She always spoke very highly of him. We had additional contact with him and with your family at First Methodist Church.

A personal memory I have of your dad is that one year he drove me home from a retreat at Sky Lake. As he drove, he saw a large turtle crossing the road, so he turned his car around, so that all the kids in the car could get out and see the animal. It seems that he also got lost and took a scenic route home. Additionally, he also had to stop to get us all some ice cream. He dropped me in my driveway about an hour and a half after all of the other kids had arrived home.

Your father was, as you well know, a great person! I know he will be missed in Oneonta for many years to come.

I send you both good wishes and deep sympathy.

Grace and peace,

~Colette Odell

Melanie,
I was so sorry to hear about your Dad. He was such a warm and caring father.
I will always remember the fun times we had during our childhood days going to each others home. Your Mom and Dad always made me feel like I was a part of your family.
My thoughts and prayers will be with you and Mark during these difficult times.

Dear Mark & JoAnn, Melanie & Tom - No visit to Oneonta was ever complete until there was a stop at 86 Maple. I always felt better after seeing Don & sharing stories & laughing together. His warm personality and bear hugs were unforgettable - along with his orange socks! I don't know how many cards he sent out each month remembering birthdays, but I know that I always looked forward to mine - especially the individualized message from him. I also remember a beautiful, prize-worthy photo that he took of you, Melanie - the one where you are looking out of the window at the birds in the yard.

Your dad was a wonderful friend - he will be missed and remembered with great fondness. Sending you my deepest sympathy.

Our condolences on the passing of a dear, gentle man. We met Don a half dozen times over the years and were mesmerized at each meeting by his ability to spin a yarn, a talent he passed on to his son. We feel fortunate for having gotten to know him. Christmas will not be the same without his whimsical photo cards.

My condolences to the entire Vosburgh family. I am saddened to read of his passing. Don was an absolutely first rate human- a great and dedicated educator, - and over forty years I never left an encounter with Don without a smile - those jokes ! I am very sorry.

Please accept my sincere condolences for the loss of such a sweet man. I am saddened by the loss of Mr. Vosburgh. He was always such a pleasure to speak with when he came into the office. He made me laugh and always put a smile on my face. I would make him my last call to patients so that I would be able to spend time on the phone with him.
