Dorothy J. Charles

Dorothy Jean "Dottie" Charles, 85, of Killen, passed away on her birthday, Jan. 18, 2015, at her residence after an extended struggle with Alzheimer's. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Florence. Dottie attended UNA later in life in 1972. She graduated in 1980 with a B.S. degree in Social Work with Magna Cum Laude honors. After graduation, she received her social work license in the state of Alabama where she volunteered her services to Safe Place, ECM Hospital, and in church activities.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 22, 2015, from 1-2 p.m. at Greenview Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Robert Sparkman officiating. Burial will follow in Greenview Memorial Park. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Charles was preceded in death by her parents, Marion and Marjorie Clendenin.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Stephen C. Charles; son, Dana Charles, of Moulton, Alabama; daughter, Carole Stafford, of Cincinnati, Ohio; sister, Ellen Russell, of Ogden, Utah; grandchildren, Keri Charles Gilley, of Moulton, Alabama, and Noel Stafford, of Cincinnati, Ohio; and great-grandchildren, Pearson Gilley, of Moulton, Alabama, and Madeleine and Eleanor Stafford, of Cincinnati, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at alzfdn.org.

Steve, Jane and I were sad to learn that Dottie had passed away. We were talking to Alice Miller and she asked us to send her condolence along with ours since she is not computer friendly.
