Douglas Bruce Obituary

Bruce Douglas A. "Alan" Bruce, 93 of Mpls., died peacefully surrounded by his family March 14, 2004 at Walker Health Care Center. He was born in Mpls on August 8, 1910 to Robert C. and Thora (Storlie) Bruce. After 30 years of service he retired in 1972 as Assistant Regional Director of the National Labor Relations Board, (NLRB) District 18. His federal government career was interrupted by military service from 1944 to 1946. Prior to the NLRB, he served as the Director of the Adult Education Council in Cincinnati, Ohio and as the Minnesota State Director of Workers Education. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers, William and Robert Bruce. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Hoff; sons, Douglas A. Jr. and wife, Holly Estes Bruce of Mpls. and Robert J. of Duluth; and grandson Wynn Alan Bruce of Boulder, CO. Other survivors include half-sister, Ms. Josephine Bruce Brennan of Van Nuys, CA; and sister-in-law Ms. Virginia Gronvall of Sacramento, CA; Bruce family nieces and nephews and Storlie cousins. He was a strong advocate for education, natural resources, humanitarian thought, community and the advancement of working people as demonstrated by his being a Governors appointee to the State Board for Community Colleges, support of the Nature Conservancy, co-founder and past president of North Shore Camp, a member of the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis, involvement with the Bryn Mawr neighborhood and a 40 year career and life-long commitment to creating economic and educational opportunities for workers and their families. A memorial service will be held at the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis on Friday, April 16, 2004 at 900 Mt. Curve Ave. in Minneapolis at 3:00 PM with a private interment at a later date.

Dear Betty and Family,
