Edward A. Gibbon, 79, of Newington, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, Nov. 5, 2004. He was the beloved husband for 51 years, of Marguerite Monastero Gibbon. Born in Chicago, IL, he was raised in Decatur, MI, and was a Newington resident since 1961. Ed served in the U. S. Navy, and was honorably discharged in May 1946. During World War II, he was involved in major battles with the Pacific Fleet, including Midway and the Battle of the Phillipines. After his naval service he sailed merchant ships for Standard Oil of New Jersey as an engineer. He was employed by Hartford Steam Boiler from 1953 to 1985 as Director of Inspection Operations. After his retirement, he went into business with his son, and established Videoland of Hartford, which he operated for the last 20 years. Ed served as Chairman of the Newington Town Planning and Zoning Commission. He served on the Republican Town Committee and was a member of the Board of Directors and past president of the Leukemia Society of America. Ed was a founding member and president of Newington Friends of Football. In 1976, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Newington Jaycees, for distinguished service to the community, and was a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit. A loving father and grandfather, he leaves his son and daughter-in-law Edward Gibbon, Jr. and Susan Kubish Gibbon, and his beloved grandson and 'Buddy', Edward Gibbon, III, all of Newington. He also leaves two brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Grace Gibbon of Greenlawn, NY, Walter and Betty Jean Gibbon of Latham, NY; a sister and brother-in-law Peggy and Nicholas Isabella of Queens, NY; and many nieces and nephews, including a special niece Patrice Marino and her husband Frank of Rye Brook, NY. He was pre-deceased by his daughter Diane Mary Gibbon; two sisters Patricia Borkowski and Ethel Green; and a brother Robert Gibbon. His funeral service will be Tuesday, 10:45 a.m. from the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Spirit. Interment, with Military Honors, will be in West Meadow Cemetery, Newington. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Newington Memorial.
