Eleanor Dent Brown Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 30, 2023.
"I lived life!" Eleanor "Ellie" Williamson Dent Brown, 81, a native of New Orleans and resident of Baton Rouge, died peacefully on March 28 with her children by her side after a short battle with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. Ellie, née Eleanor McFerrin Williamson, was born in New Orleans to Laure Murphy Williamson and Charles Samuel Williamson III. She attended the Academy of the Sacred Heart, New Orleans, and graduated from St. Joseph's Academy, Baton Rouge. She was a graduate of Louisiana State University and later earned her Juris Doctor degree from L.S.U. Law School. She was a member of several social and historical organizations and a past board member of numerous civic and professional organizations. As a young entrepreneur, she started Eleanor Dent Realty and quickly established herself as a leader in the community. In the 1970s, she began the movement to save architecturally significant homes in neglected areas by moving and renovating them. Many of them remain notable residences today. In 1987 she moved to Providence, Rhode Island, for a Judicial Clerkship with the Rhode Island Supreme Court. She lived in Providence for many years practicing family law and later arbitration and mediation. She later lived in Washington, D.C. before returning home to New Orleans and, most recently, to Baton Rouge. Ellie was an ardent lover of history, art, and politics. She was an eloquent writer, an enthusiastic traveler, a dedicated runner, and a health enthusiast. She was known for her beauty, unparalleled style, a flair for design, business acumen, and sharp wit. She was a gourmand with a voracious appetite and an enviable 22-inch waistline. She had a life full of successes, but in her words, "my children are my greatest accomplishment." She is predeceased by her parents, a brother George Edward Williamson, and godmother, Virginia Wallace Ward. She is survived by her three children, Fred Columbus Dent III (Amy Horn) of Baton Rouge, Charles Williamson Dent, Catherine Dent Eliasberg (Peter) of Los Angeles, CA, as well as three grandchildren, Connor Columbus Dent, Veronica Grace Dent, and Oliver Thurgood Eliasberg. She is also survived by her brother Charles Williamson IV, and sisters, Laure Williamson of Baton Rouge, and Winifred Williamson Brown (Mark) of New Orleans, a god-daughter, Eleanor Wall, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 2nd from 11- 12:30 at the Baton Rouge City Club, immediately followed by a brief celebration and reception. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the National Prion Disease Center, Case Western Reserve University.

I Met Ellie through my friend and her neighbor, Cindy Samuel. On many occasions, Ellie joined Cindy and me at the opera and at a post-opera dinner at the Upperline Restaurant. We discovered that my sister had lived near her in Providence. What a lovely and interesting woman!

For many years, up until she moved from New Orleans to Baton Rouge, seven of us; Grant and Suzy Smith, David and Connie Schultz, John-Patrick and Patricia Lestrade, and Ellie would meet at least once per month for dinner. We all treasured these opportunities to get together because of our shared Weltanschauung, focussed on NOSHA.org, politics, New Orleans, and more. I smile with tears in my eyes thinking of Ellie's dynamism as she discussed this or that politician! She was of incredible value as a group member and friend. She is sorely missed.

Ellie always made me feel like I had something to offer. And that made me want to live up to her expectations. She was always gracious and kind and above all elegant. She made the world a better place and I am heartbroken that she is no longer here with us. I hope it gives you some comfort to know that she will be so very missed and fondly remembered by all of us who were lucky to know her.

I was glad to get to know Elllie at several reading/discussion groups in New Orleans and always enjoyed her insightful comments. I especially remember her at Mardi Gras parties in costume. She was a lovely presence wherever she went and will truly be missed.

Ellie was my wonderful neighbor in New Orleans. We lived across Constance St. from each other, both on corners facing Louisiana Avenue. Across from my house, an owner tried to change the zoning on his building to become an "ice cream parlor." We knew that if he got commercial zoning his place would eventually become a bar, so Ellie and I roused the neighborhood to protest the change at the City Council meeting. We won! Ellie was the best friend and neighbor I could ever have had. I have missed her since she moved, and will always remember and miss her.

Ellie was a dear customer of mine when she wanted to travel she would call me an say I'm ready to go to the train station for my trip. Very seldom she would go to the airport. Only if Oliver was coming in to stay she would take a ride with me to get him. She truly loved that Boy "Oliver" he is so smart she would say. That was her . She would tell me Jan Ellen can you come check my house for me an of course I would then when it was clear she would go do whatever an I would get all the mail an pick it up for her. I always made sure she was comfortable when I left. My sister an I really enjoyed talking to Ellie an she would love to tell us bout her trips. May you rest in peace Ellie my dear friend till we meet again.
