Eugene Porter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 1, 2013.
Eugene Cornelius Porter, Jr. age 64 of West Palm Beach, Florida formerly of Littleton, Colorado was called to his "Heavenly Home" suddenly and unexpectantly on June 29, 2013. Eugene was born on June 17, 1949 in New Haven, Connecticut. In later years Eugene was stationed at the US Army Personnel Center in Oakland, California, while serving a tour of duty in the US Army Rangers. After his tour of duty with the US Army he attained his Masters Degree in Psychology and Behavioral Sciences. He then began his professional career in the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Field, where he began working at Fort Logan in Denver, Colorado. Then he began patient rounding work at various Hospital ER Rooms in the Denver area. Eugene rounded out his employment career at Porter Hospital in Littleton, Colorado, where he accepted the Director's role in the Outpatient Program for Alcohol and Substance Abuse for the next five years and subsequently moved to Florida in April. Eugene will not only be remembered for his life changing guidance in the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Fields; but also as a loving, devoted father to his daughter, Sarah; whom the "sun rose and set on"; "weekend warrior" and Harley-Davidson Road King Ultra Glide rider; concealed weapons marksman first class in various caliber weaponry; and a beach goer who loved to sunbathe and participate in various outdoor water activities. Eugene has been described by those that knew him as an ominous figure; over shadowed by his "Teddy Bear" nature, warm heart with a face that glowed exuberantly. His memory will be forever treasured by his newlywed wife and longtime companion, Joan (nee Honigman) Porter of West Palm Beach, Florida formerly of Littleton, Colorado; his treasured daughter, Sarah Porter of Littleton, Colorado; and his former wife, Dana Krafchick of Littleton, Colorado; two step-daughters, Sydney Schoonmaker of Denver, Colorado and Maggie Schoonmaker of Manhattan, New York. Family and Friends will gather on Monday, July 8, 2013 at 10:30 A.M.in the South Florida VA National Cemetery, 6501 South State Road 7, Lake Worth, Florida 33449, (561) 649-6489 with the United States Army presenting Military Honors to the family. Those planning expressions of sympathy have been asked to consider making a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, Florida 32256, www.woundedwarriorproject.org or the Amercian Heart Association, 2300 Centre Park West Drive, West Palm Beach, FL 33409, www.americanheart.org in Honor of the Memory of Eugene Cornelius Porter, Jr. Online condolences can be shared at: www.mizellfavillezern.com.

The world has become a sadder and lonelier place without my dear friend Gene.I know we will all feel his loss terribly.I also know that Gene would want all of us to remember him as someone who took life in stride and appreciated all that it has to offer us.He taught me to accept not only the beauty and goodness in our lives but how to learn patience and strength by understanding life's difficulties also.
My heart goes out to his beautiful wife Joanie and his dear daughter Sarah.May the pain they are feeling now be soon replaced by the great memories of the time they both spent with him and the love he felt for both of them.

I am so shocked and saddened by the loss of my friend Gene. He has left us all way too early and I thought that he would be riding his motorcycle for another 25 years or so. I met him when he came to the bicycle shop that I owned in New Haven, CT. He ended up helping me out at the shop and becoming my friend. I was honored to be the best man at his wedding to Dana.
We once rode our bicycle to Cape Cod, Mass from New Haven. I will treasure his friendship forever and mourn his most untimely passing.
