Florence Berger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 11, 2007.
BERGER, FLORENCE ANNA Dec. 27, 1925 to April 26, 2007 Flo, a 35 year resident of Potrero, went home to the Lord after a long struggle with her health. She cherished her Church, its members, and especially the priests, active and retired. She was active in the VFW Auxiliary and served many years, most lately as Chaplain. She was also active with the Friends of the Potrero Library, the Canasta Club, the Bunko Bunch, and loved helping out at all the local community events. She loved her cats and dogs, the Zoo, Sea World, Sundays at Balboa Park and good food. Most of all she loved her family and children; all children. Reading to children at the library and interacting with them was one of her greatest joys. Flo was born in Chicago, the first child of Charles John Slusarczyk and Marie Wojczinski. She grew up in and around the Windy City and worked for E.J Brach's candy in accounting. During WWII she met a handsome sailor at a Chicago roller rink, one James Anthony (Jim) Berger. They married June 1, 1946. In 1957, the family moved to Chula Vista where Jim worked in the aerospace industry and Flo worked for the School district at Hazel Goes Cook Elementary, starting as an aide and eventually becoming a kitchen manager. She was selected as the first Cafeteria Manager of the then brand-new Tiffany Elementary. In 1972, the family moved to Jim's dream, the family ranch in Potrero. Jim passed away in 1997. Flo is survived by three sons, James, Thomas and Eric; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and her two sisters; Alice Jarvis of Illinois and Barbra Berg of Wisconsin. She is already greatly missed. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 12th at 2 p.m. at St. Adelaide's Catholic Church on Dewey Place, Campo. In lieu of flowers please make a contribution to the VFW National Home in her name. Any VFW post can assist you. Please sign the guest book at obituaries.uniontrib.com
