Gail Hurst Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 24, 2009.
Gail Keesling Hurst died May 13, in Torrance, California at the age of 82. She was born to Maude and Alvin Keesling in Crocker, Porter County, IN, and lived there, in Liberty Center Township, and in Valparaiso before graduating from Valparaiso High School. Her maternal grandfather, Fred LaHayne platted the town of LaHayne in 1892, which became Crocker, now an incorporated area of Chesterton. The Hurst's raised their family at Wauhob Lake before moving to California in 1967. Gail was multi-talented and enjoyed writing poetry, painting, book collecting, and redecorating. In her teens, she sang at events and on the radio with a friend as the Two Blue Notes. After the children were grown, Gail studied to become a registered nurse. She worked at hospitals in the Los Angeles area and cared for her parents in her home for many years. Gail is survived by her daughters, Suzi Maltony of Calhoun, GA, Lori Northam of Sacramento, CA; her sons, Russell (Linda) Shinabarger of Kirkland, WA, Gary Shinabarger (Susan) of Santa Barbara, CA, George Grundell, Torrance, CA, Robert (Del) Hurst of Princeton, IN, Michael (Anita) Hurst of Grass Valley, CA; thirteen grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joyce Parker of Monroe, LA, and Lucille Linden of Pullman, WA; sister-in-law, Merry Benke of Portage, IN, also survives her. Two brothers, Keith Keesling and Lorne Benke preceded her in death. Cremation has occurred and celebration of her life will be held later this summer. I met Gail several years ago through my daughter and my grandson's.
They were young boys trying to make a few dollars and they knocked on Gail's door and anyone knowing Gail knows that she put them to work! They loved her from the very start and she loved them as well.
I met her and I also liked her very much.
She and I talked alot on the phone and of course we e-mailed each other.
Gail was a very bright lady with many good qualities she shared alot of her families happings with me when her son was campaning for Hillary Clinton she was so proud of him and she sent me all of the articles about him.
She also shared with me about her grand father and how he platted the town of LaHayne.
I loved Gail and I will miss her greatly I will certainly miss her e-mails and her occasional phone calls and she always called me sweet Mary.
Her job here on earth helping others is finished and now she can rest in the loving arms of her dear Lord and Savior.
May God be with the family in your time of sorrow my sympathy goes out to her family. I am so sorry for your loss.
Good bye my dear friend Gail I will see you again one of these days in heaven.
Love Mary

I remember Aunt Gail as always being kind and caring. As a youngster, it seemed that there were always dozens of kids around their big house. I will always recall the good times with the best cousins a guy could have. Rest In Peace Aunt Gail.

To me it is hard to believe she is gone. This wonderful lady married my brother after WW2 and I thought she was the most gracious lady that I had ever known. Big thoughts for a 6 year old HuH? Gail went her way my brother another and time went on but that is what life is all about.
Gail helped me find my brother when I was in the Army in Viet Nam. I missed seeing him by one day but still without her guidance I might have never known my brother was even in Viet Nam.
Again years go by and 3 years ago I found Gail again. She helped me understand my brother’s passing and brought me more into her life. We corresponded mostly through jokes and she sent me a lot of photos of her family to keep me informed about her life.
I have lost a friend, and it saddens be that I have to speak of her in the past tense.
I know that the good LORD will welcome her in heaven and I hope to see her again someday up there.
My sympathy goes out to her family. I am sorry for your loss.

May GOD BLESS you Gail
