Geneva E Short

Short - Geneva E. (nee Averett) Geneva Evelyn Averett-Short was born March 12, 1938 in Boston, Massachusetts. She passed away on January 17, 2023 in Washington, DC. Geneva was a graduate of the prestigious Bennett College (B.A. class of 1958) which she proudly supported, and the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo (M.S. class of 1971). Geneva was a resident of Buffalo from 1958 to 1972, and Fredonia from 1974 to 1977. She was an inspiring educator, and served in various positions of responsibility throughout her career, including SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Fredonia, the University of Utah, and Prince George's County Community College. In her ardent desire to help others in need she served as a program manager for the District of Columbia Department of Social Services. After retiring in 2003, she pursued various interests. She served as a volunteer poll worker for elections in Palm Coast, Florida. She had a lifelong interest in fine arts, studied ballet at a young age, and began teaching ballet at age 16. In retirement she developed an interest in acting and had several minor roles in local theater productions. She was surrounded by her family in Washington when she passed. She was married to the late Floyd J. Short Jr., a career employee of the Central Intelligence Agency. She is survived by her son Thomas (Dagmar) Blackwell, daughters LaVerne (Alex) Delorey and Constance Blackwell; and her grandchildren Cristian and Noemi Delorey, and Julia Blackwell.
