RACINE - Gustave A. 'Gus' Schumann, 80, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2008, after a couple of strokes, the first in May, 2007. He was born in Beech Grove, Ind., a suburb of Indianapolis, Ind., July 27, 1927, son of the late Gustave H. and Gertrude (nee: Kelly) Schumann, and grew up in the south suburbs of Chicago, Ill. Gus graduated from De La Salle High School in Chicago, Ill. in 1945. He then proudly served in the United States Army for about 15 months, stationed in Guam. After his discharge, he attended Loyola University, Chicago, Ill., and graduated with honors in Chemistry in 1951. Gus graduated with honors again from Loyola with a Business Degree in 1961. He was employed at S.C. Johnson as a Research Chemist. After retirement, he continued to work half days at S.C. Johnson for Manpower. Gus was always known for his humorous nature, along with stand-up comic acts, entertaining his friends and colleagues. He was an avid sportsman, who loved the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bears. To play golf was second nature for him and he organized "The Gus Schumann Golf Invitational" for 42 years. He called it the "Northern Masters." Gus was always eager to help anyone in need. He will be deeply missed. Survivors include his sister, Mary Elizabeth Schumann, recently of Racine; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, George. A Funeral Prayer service will be held at St. Edward Catholic Church, 1401 Grove Avenue, Thursday, March 20, 2008, 12 noon with Allen Bratkowski officiating, assisted by Deacon Russell Missureli. Interment with full Military Honors will be held Friday, 12 noon at Oakland Cemetery, Dolton, Ill. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. and at church Thursday from 11 a.m. until time of services. Memorials to St. Edward Catholic Church or to one's favorite charity have been suggested. MARESH-MEREDITH AND ACKLAM FUNERAL HOME 803 Main Street 634-7888

I knew something must have been happening to Gus when I did not receive a Christmas card this past year. I was very sad to see that he had passed away in March. I had the great pleasure to play many rounds of golf with Gus during my time in Racine at Johnson Wax and found him to be a very special human being. Since leaving Racine we have corresponded every Christmas for the past 30+ years and I always looked forward to his envelope full of newspaper clippings on golf, baseball, football and life in general. He will be missed.

To The Family of Gus Schumann,

Gus was a very close friend. We played golf together for over 30 years. He will be sorely missed. Ithink of him every day.

He is in a better place now and if there is a golf course in heaven, i;m sure he's out there now-hopefully, shooting par.

His good friend and best golf buddy,
