Hazel Howard Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 27, 2007.
DALLAS - Hazel Balthazar Howard was born Dec. 12, 1914, on Cane River in Louisiana. The daughter of a small business owner and seamstress, Hazel Howard became very interested in education at a young age. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Texas College and a Master of Arts degree in English at the University of Denver. Hazel devoted her life to teaching English, and throughout the years, she helped shape the lives of students who remember her with fondness and gratitude. Even after her retirement, Hazel Howard's love for books and knowledge continued at the Marshall Public Library, where she volunteered for a number of years. In 2001, Hazel Howard moved to Dallas, in order to be closer to family. Though she remained in contact with neighbors and friends, and never forgot her home parish of St. Joseph in Marshall, Hazel adopted Holy Cross Catholic Church as her second church home where she was lovingly called "Mamma Howard" by many. Hazel Howard was preceded in death by her father, Louis Nicholas Balthazar; mother, Beatrice Hebert; and brother, George Kirkland. She is survived by her four children, Carole Brown (George), Smith Howard Jr. (Janice), Nicholas Howard, and Vicki Mathews (Sherbie); 10 grandchildren, Kevin, Derek, Rodney, Leah, Mark, Stephen, Nicholas II, Aliya, Allison and Aaron; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends. Hazel Howard died on Monday, Sept. 24, 2007, after a long life of 92 years. A Vigil Prayer Service will be held at Laurel Land Funeral Home, 6000 S. R.L. Thornton Freeway, Dallas, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, 2007. Funeral services will be at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 2926 E. Ledbetter Drive, Dallas, on Sept. 29, 2007, at noon. Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

Mrs. Howard,as I knew her, was a delight. She taught english when I was in 8th grade. I was her student then and became a student of her life, as she lived so actively after her retirement. I saw her at church and always made a point to talk to her as well as at the library.I have missed her. On behalf of the class of '73 please accept our condolences. She was one great lady.

Mrs. Howard's wonderful smile and gentle spirit made it easy for all of us to learn what we needed to know to excell in college and in life. I am sure she is one of the reasons I scored the highest of all freshman students on my college-entrance English exam. Her spirit will always be an inspiration to so many, including me.

I sat next to Mrs. Howard during mass at Holy Cross two weeks ago. I always enjoyed speaking with her and marveled at how she remained active and engaged even as she grew older. She was a bright and delightful woman who was a most faithful servant. I will miss seeing her at church and my prayers and love go to her family.

With love and in Christ,
