Hillard Howard Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 3 to May 22, 2016.
Hillard Hays Howard, 72, died June 30, 2015 at the Heart of the Rockies Medical Center in Salida Colorado. Hillard was born to Harold French and Ruth Bugg Howard on March 19,1943 in Stuttgart Arkansas. Hillard was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Lynn. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Cheryll Faust.
Hillard received a Bachelor of Science in Physics from UNM and a PhD in Physics from Vanderbilt University. He began his career as a liaison between LASL and the international users group for LAMPF and he worked to bring a UNM branch campus to the town of Los Alamos. Hillard worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1972 until his retirement in 2003. His career included work in medium energy particle physics at LAMPF, radiological risk analysis and safety assessment, and management. He was instrumental in bringing an institutionally supported employee wellness program to the Laboratory. Hillard retired in 2003 after more than 30 years at the Laboratory. In 2006, Hillard and Cheryll moved to Salida, Colorado.
Hillard was an ice skater and an avid bicyclist. He was a graceful, beautiful, alpine skier. Later in life, he took up telemark skiing and quickly became a graceful, beautiful, telemark skier. He loved to share his passion for the sport, and worked with Pajarito to start a telemark festival, the Telebration.
Hillard took to retirement with enthusiasm. He volunteered as a site steward for Santa Fe National forest and at the Valles Caldera National monument. Hillard took great pleasure in fly-fishing, flying kites, mountaineering, and backpacking. He loved trains, opera, live music, theater, physics, and good chocolate. He reveled in a lively conversation. Hillard often said his proudest accomplishment was the collection of people he was privileged to call friends. Hillard loved life and lived well.
Hillard faced a series of challenging health issues in the last several years of his life, then ultimately pancreatic cancer. A Celebration of Life will be held May 21, 2016, 5 to 8pm, at Fuller Lodge in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Friends are invited to come and encouraged to share memories and stories. Hillard was a man who courageously took a personal approach to everything he pursued, in addition to being a natural born leader, a scientist with brillant ideas and a people motivator. As the president of the Los Alamos National Laboratory Club 1663, he was determined to make his dream of a Wellness Center a reality, so that Lab employees would be able to enrich their lives through exercise, improved nutrition and overall holistic wellness. Being that I have been residing in Asia, it is with tearfull regret that I had learned of his passing too late (2018) to attend the gathering at Fuller Lodge. I will remember you, Hillard, and my heart and prayers will be with you, Cheryl. May you be filled with peace and joy, to accompany those loving memmories of Hillard.

I had the privilege of having Hillard as a friend for many years, and although we had not been in touch for a long time, I treasure the times shared in church, high school, college and beyond - and particularly when he was there for my family in times of sadness. He was such a special person, and brought so much to those around him....I am so sorry this note is so late, but I just got the news yesterday. My prayers go with you.

I had the pleasure of working with Hillard and Cheryll in safety, health physics, and risk management quite a few years. Sorry I missed his memorial service, Cheryll. I didn't know what an ordeal you and he were going through. I wish you God's peace.

Hillard was a a lot of fun to exchange ideas with and to collaborate with on physics topics. I especially enjoyed and learned from his broad interests.

Hillard and I worked at LAMPF in the early '70s. We had a common thread but was not work. Three of us Hillard, Don Nichols and I (Cecil Stark) all owned Porsche sports cars. He has a 911 Targa, Don had a 912 and I had a 356B. We use to park the three cars next to one another in the parking lot of the LOB at LAMPF. Other people had Italian cars but we claimed to have the best cars manufactured. So sorry to hear of his passing.
