James Burlingham Obituary

James P. Burlingham James P. Burlingham, of State College, formerly of West Grove, died peacefully, Monday, March 13, 2006, in State College, after a long illness. He was 86. "Jim," as he was known, was born in 1919, in Syracuse, N.Y., a son of the late James Philander and Mabel (Root) Burlingham. He was a birthright Unitarian and was a member, for 14 years, of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Centre County. Jim earned a Bachelors Degree from Cornell University in 1941, and completed a Masters Degree in chemistry at Princeton University in 1949. In 1941, Jim began a 40-year career with the EI DuPont de Nemours Company as a chemical engineer, and held a variety of positions including several with the company's design divisions located in Newark, Del. and Sao Paulo, Brazil. Jim had a deep love for nature, especially horticulture and birds, and was involved in several related organizations. He served on the Board of Directors of the North American Rock Garden Society Delaware Valley Chapter. He will be remembered for his love of poetry, prose, theater and film, his civic mindedness, and his kind and gracious manner. He is survived by his wife, Esther Height Burlingham, of State College; his daughters, Sally Frank and Nancy Brodsky; grandchildren, AJ and Jordan Brodsky, and Alexandra and Andrew Frank, of Westchester County, N.Y.; and sister, Margaret Claire Scheuren, of Hingham, Mass. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert G. Burlingham. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 1, 2006, at 3 p.m., at Foxdale Village, 500 E. Marylyn Ave., State College. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pennsylvania Parks and Forest Foundation (memo line: Black Moshannon State Park), 105 N. Front St., Harrisburg, PA 17101, or the Foxdale Village Employee Assistance Fund, 500 E. Marylyn Ave., State College, PA 16801.
