James Lowry Obituary

James W. Lowry, 88, of Hagerstown, Md, passed away Sunday, October 23, 2022, at the Mennonite Home near Maugansville, Md.

Born June 9, 1934, in Canton, Ohio, he was the son of the late James Everett Lowry and Pauline Edna Haskins.

He graduated from Kent State University, with a B. A. degree in 1958 and from University of Chicago in 1960 with a M. A. in Classics.

He was employed as a teacher, writer, and librarian. He taught on a Fullbright Exchange in Pakistan (1963-1964) and Austria (1966-1967). From 1998 through 2015 he worked on the "Amsterdam Archives Project," living in the Netherlands for the first year. This research resulted in a series of volumes published by the Ohio Amish Library from 2003-2015.

James was baptized at the age of 26 into the Mennonite Church.

He was a member of the Washington County Maryland, and Franklin County Pennsylvania, Mennonite Church at the time of his death.

James enjoyed teaching German classes to his grandchildren.

He passed away peacefully while surrounded by grandchildren singing from the family's German songbook, Lowry Lieder.

James is survived by his wife of sixty years, Mattie Troyer; five children, Rebecca (Dale Martin), Enoch (Amanda), and Abigail (Cecil Martin) all of Hagerstown; Isaac (Rhoda) of Falling Waters, WV; Seth (Doreen) of Clearville, PA; twenty-nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; a brother William D. Bell of Canton.

Viewing will be held on Thursday, October 27, from 1:00 to 3:00 and 6:00-8:00 PM at the Stouffer Mennonite Meetinghouse, 23303 Welty Church Road, Smithsburg Maryland. Funeral service will be Friday, October 28, at 10:00 AM with viewing one hour before the service also at the Stouffer Meetinghouse.
