James Sloan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 11, 2016.
James E. Sloan (Jim) passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2016, at the Salmon Creek Hospice Care Center in Vancouver, Washington. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Carol; his children Jim Sloan (m. AJ Sloan) and Elizabeth Sloan (m. Walter Cahall); his step-children Marsha Roether and Jim Miller; his grandchildren Audrey, Henry, Jason, Justin, Kelsey, Megan, Nate, and Theo; his sister Neola Kennedy; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bill and Jodi Hennings; great-grandchildren; and his dog Sophie. Jim was predeceased by his parents James and Ethel Sloan and his brothers Edward and John Murphy.

Jim resided in Vancouver, Washington for many years. He was born and raised in Butte, Montana. He graduated from Butte High School. Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1955. He was promoted to engineman third class while serving aboard the destroyer escort USS Currier. Jim attended Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology, and he ultimately graduated from the University of Montana in Missoula with a bachelors degree in business.

Jim worked for Consolidated Freightways for 30 years, and retired as a Division Manager. Jim loved trucking. In his youth in Butte Jim drove a truck in the open Berkeley Pit copper mine; he was a trucking executive in his career; and in his retirement he occasionally took assignments driving truck and transporting cars.

He traveled with Carol to the Oregon coast, New York, and to San Francisco (always staying at the Chancellor on Union Square). He and Carol took in many plays and concerts. Tony Bennett and Diana Krall were among their favorites.

Jim enjoyed cooking and dining out. He recalled with fondness working at a Butte bakery as a boy. He was quick with a recipe or restaurant recommendation. He liked cooking and made amazing pancakes, clam dip, and sage turkey stuffing. He would never pass on a pasty (so long as it was made exclusively with steak, onions and potato).

Jim was straight-forward and engaging. He had a fabulous memory and told amazing stories with all the details. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend and neighbor. Jim will be sorely missed.

Donations in his honor may be made to the American Cancer Society or Community Home Health & Hospice. A service will be held on Friday, April 1st, at 10:30 a.m. at Southminster Presbyterian Church (12250 SW Denney Road, Beaverton, Oregon 97008).

Carol I have been trying to get a hold of you. This whole thing made me so sad. I missed him by 2 weeks last summer in Denver. Wanted to see him before he passed. I spent 3 days with uncle John. I am glad I had the chance. Wish I could have done the same with uncle Jimmy. I always loved being around him and John. Reminded me a lot of my Dad. I still miss him so much. They were all so positive kind mello and intelligent. Will be missed greatly.
