James Slovak Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 30, 2017.
James Pierpont Slovak, M.D., 70, a highly regarded local psychiatrist, passed away Sunday at his home in Scranton, of natural causes.

Born in Reading on June 26, 1946, he was the beloved son of Jane M. McGuire (Slovak) Kurtz of Lancaster and the late Dr. John P. Slovak. After graduating from Weatherly Area High School, he earned his bachelor's degree in science from Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Md. He then attained his medical degree from the former Hahnemann Medical College, now Drexel University College of Medicine. He studied at the Anna Freud Clinic in Hampstead, England, and was board-certified in both child and adult psychiatry and neurology. His successful career in our community spanned four decades and touched the lives of many grateful patients.

James was an avid golfer and sailor and a member of Glenmaura Country Club. He loved boating on Lakes Harmony and Wallenpaupack. He enjoyed sketching, painting and photography. Brilliant, kind and generous, James was loved by everyone he met.

He is also survived by three siblings, Janine Pendyck and husband, Paul, of Lancaster; John Slovak, M.D., and wife, Roxanne, of Lititz; and Joyce Stevens, of Dallas; multiple nieces and nephews; and, in addition, his beloved companion, Catherine Frederick, of Scranton.

Blessing services by the Rev. John S. Terry are scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m. in the Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton. Relatives and friends may pay their respects Friday from 1 until services.

Due to James' love for all animals, especially cats, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Blue Chip Farm animal Refuge, 974 Lockville Road, Dallas, 18612. Please visit the funeral home's website for directions or to leave an online condolence.
