Jay Sommers Obituary

Jay A. Sommers, age 64, of Chauncey, formerly of Orrville, passed away late Saturday evening, March 29, 2014 at his home.  Born Dec. 14, 1949 in Lusk, Wyoming, he was the son of the late Jackson & Eunice Sommers.


He was a longtime Orrville resident and a resident of the Athens area since 2002.  He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War.  He was employed as a respiratory therapist at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Cleveland and as a machinist at Contours.  He was a life member of the Orrville VFW Post 3446 and a member of the Orrville American Legion Post.  He enjoyed gardening and woodworking.


Jay is survived by two daughters- Becky Lusher of Huntington, WV and Jamie (Chad) Hunt of Orrville; five sons- Scott Sommers of Huntington, WV, Brian (Jill) Sommers of Canal Fulton, Jared (Jacqueline Jackway-Helms) Sommers of Orrville, Neil (Maria) Sommers of Nelsonville and Evan (Tina) Sommers of Orrville; his former wife and mother of the children, Kathy Sommers of Grove City; grandchildren- Alexander, Gabriel & Brandson Smith, Charles Hunt, Alexis , Michaela  & Joseph Sommers, Teddy & Sabrina Sommers, Evan, Jordan & Jasmine Sommers, Bree, Bryce & Brennan Lusher; his longtime companion Sue Foster of Chauncey; and a brother Terry Sommers of Wyoming.


Besides his parents he is preceded in death by a grandson, Ezekiel Sommers; and a brother, Randy Sommers. 


A memorial gathering will be held Friday, April 25th from 4-8pm at the VFW Post 3446, 430 W. Market St., Orrville, Ohio.  Local arrangements are with Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens.   


In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Wilderness Center by mailing the donation to The Wilderness Center, P.O. Box 202, Wilmot, OH 44689-0202 and writing Jay Sommers in the memo section.
