Jesse Darnell Obituary
Mr. Darnell was born Nov. 16, 1950, in Benton, the son of Carl F. "Pat" and Dana (Marquis) Darnell. He married the former Mary Gloria, and she preceded him in death July 21, 1989.
He loved horses and was a former trainer, jockey and farm manager at various horse farms. He also worked at several horse racing tracks, including Ellis Park, Churchill Downs, Bluegrass Downs, Keeneland and Hoosier Park.
He started his horse racing career at Franklin County Fairgrounds in Benton and also raced at most every county fair in Southern Illinois. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and duck hunting.
Surviving relatives include his son, J.J. Darnell of Benton; five brothers, Donald Darnell of Akin, Ronald Darnell of Energy, Jimmy Darnell of Benton, Phil Darnell of Macedonia and Mark Darnell of Bossier City, La.; one sister, Edna Williams of Elgin; several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lois Mae Andriano; and two brothers, Carl Dean Darnell and Bill Darnell.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, in Brady Cemetery in Akin.
Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home in Benton is in charge of arrangements.

My sympathy goes out to you. Jesse was a classmate and pony competitor. One time, Jesse stayed at our house; he was very polite and courteous.
