Jim PETRO Obituary

PETRO _Jim Petro passed away suddenly Wednesday, February 18, 2004 due to complications following a recent surgery. Jim was a brave and strong man to the end. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Velma; his children, Gayle (Derek) and her son, Sean, Lyle (Karen) and their children, Eric, Keith and Leanne, Mayda (Gerard) and their children, Alexandra, Dylan and Mitchell; as well as his mother, Katherine Petro of Swift Current; brother, Victor (Anne); and sisters, Joyce (Matt) and Gail (George); and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his father, Andrew Bernard Petro; and his brother, Robert Petro. Jim was born on April 19, 1936 in Swift Current and spent his early years in Simmie. He then went on to study law at the University of Saskatchewan. Upon completion of his law degree, Jim set out on a new path journalism. He spent many years working at the Regina Leader-Post and the Saskatoon StarPhoenix until reaching the post of executive editor and finally retiring in 1988. Not one to let grass grow beneath his feet, Jim decided to return to law and articled under Gerry Allbright. Jim was called to the bar and found that he did not have to search far to find his true passion his family and friends. His grandchildren and lively discussions with family and friends became his source of energy. He and Velma enjoyed travelling extensively through Canada and the U.S. We will miss him. Funeral Service to be held at the Saskatoon Funeral Home on Monday, February 23 at 11:00 a.m. Cremation committal to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations made in memorium of Jim Petro to the Canadian Red Cross, 443 2nd Ave. N., Saskatoon, SK, S7K 2C1.
