Joan was very influential in my life when we were in secondary school in England. She was my English teacher, Girl Guide Captain, she lived with my family and we remained good friends for many years. Life took us down separate paths, but she will never be forgotten. Condolences to her nearest and dearest.

I remember one class when Joan and I were graduate students. We sat in the back row talking (quietly) about the professor's performance. She was a person I learned from -a person of wisdom.

Joan was a true friend to me, and to many, and a wonderful supporter in some hard times. She did so much to help so many of the people around her in that intense NYC anthropological world of the 1970s and after. My sympathies go to all of Joan's many friends from those far-off times.

Joan Vincent was my mentor when I was her graduate student at Barnard, Columbia University, and she became my Ph.D. advisor. She was a great teacher and a great anthropologist and her memory and work will live on.

Very sad with the news of Joans passing away. She was a great anthropologist, friend and advisor. I learned a lot with her.

Those of us at Barnard College are saddened by the news of Joan's passing. She was a giant in the fields of Africanist, political, and Marxist anthropology. Please be in touch with us so we can learn more--we would like to honor her with a memorial moment at Barnard in the fall.
