John Reihl Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 19, 2011.
Passed away 08/19/2011, at the Goodwin House in Bailey's Crossroads, VA. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ellen. He leaves behind his son John, daughter-in-law Brenda, son Jeff, daughter-in-law Kristin, and grandchildren Audrey, Alec and Meade.

Jack was born October 24th, 1923 in Waterbury, CT. He attended local schools for grade and high school, and then went to Tufts University (undergraduate), Notre Dame Naval midshipman's school and Yale University for post-graduate work, graduating in 1949 with a M.S. in Mechanical engineering. He served in the navy during WWII (from 1944-46) as an officer on the USS General Callen and USS Merick.

After the war, he chose a career as an engineer for the US Navy Civil Service, with a focus on nuclear submarine design and technology. From 1951 – 1962, he worked for the US Navy in Natick, MA (for the Army Quatermaster Corps); New London, CT (supervising the building of nuclear submarines for Electric Boat Co.); and Oahu, HI (overhauling nuclear subs). In 1962, he took a job with the Naval Strategic Systems Office, which brought him to the Washington, DC area, where he stayed until his retirement.

A peaceable, quite and dependable man, he was beloved by all who knew him. His love and humor will be sorely missed by his family. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral mass to be held at Goodwin house Bailey's Crossroads on Saturday, 8/27/2011 at 10:30 am. A memorial interment will be held at a later date at St. Mary of the Lakes, on Pelican Lake, MN. Arrangements under the direction of Arlington Funeral Home, Arlington, VA.
