Dr. Jorge Patriarca Juliano Sr.

October 24, 1930 - April 19, 2014

Dr. Jorge P. Juliano Sr, PhD. of Salem, Oregon, passed away Saturday, April 19 2014, at the age of 83. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 26th at 2:00 pm, Morningside United Methodist Church, 3674 12th St. SE, Salem, OR 97302. Reception will immediately follow in the fellowship hall.


Visitation will be held Friday, April 25th, from 12:00 noon to 6:00 pm at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.


He was born October 24, 1940, in Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines to Clemente M. Juliano Sr. and Paciencia P. Juliano. He graduated valedictorian from University of the Philippines Rural High School, class of 1945, awarded his bachelors cum laude in 1951 from University of the Philippines College of Agriculture, where he was a charter member, Los Banos Chapter, Upsilon Sigma Phi. At Pennsylvania State University he earned his Masters in Agricultural Education in 1954 and was bestowed his terminal degree in 1968 – receiving his Doctorate in Botany, also from Penn State.


Dr. Juliano received many honors, including Senator Madrigal's scholarship in Agriculture, University of the Philippines, Fulbright Travel Grant to the U.S., United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia, through Silliman University. He also received scholarships by the Rockefeller Foundation for post-graduate studies at UC Davis, the National Science Development Board, Philippines and the President's Volunteer Service Award from the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation under both Presidents George W. Bush and Barrack H. Obama.


Dr. Juliano was an Instructor, then Associate Professor and Principal at the University High School, Central Luzon State University, Philippines – later moving on as Instructor of Agriculture at Silliman University, Philippines. His career included Sr. Scientist at Dole Mushrooms, Spawn Plant Manager at Mushroom King, Vice President of Family Mushrooms and the Oregon Shiitake Grower's Association. In 1986, he started his own company Mycotek, Inc. in Salem Oregon.


Volunteering around the world, he visited over 18 countries. He was a co-founder of GSFAA, and a Free and Accepted Mason. Jorge enjoyed traveling for leisure with his wife, photography, cooking and spending time with his eight grandchildren – telling them stories of his childhood. An ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church, he had a strong faith in Christ and His Word.


Dr. Juliano and his family immigrated from the Philippines and in 1974 and became US citizens . He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dr. Amelia T. Juliano, their daughter Patricia Juliano and husband Mark Panther, children Harrison and Hayden, their daughter Tessa Woodyard and husband John, children Olin, Kielan, Emerson and Lochlan, their son Jorge Jr. and wife Tammie, children Jaisa and Kinsley, Dr. Juliano's sister Dr. Emma Ramos and husband Antonio along with many nieces, nephews and extended family.


He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Clemente Jr., and sister Bella Dingayan.
