JOSEPH BRENNER Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 1, 2012.
BRENNER
JOSEPH M., M.D.
Age 72, died on Monday, July 30, 2012 at his New Orleans, LA residence. Survived by his wife of 44 years, Ronnie Rittmaster Brenner; their daughter, Jennifer Brenner Birmingham; son-in-law, Jim Birmingham; and their granddaughter, Alafair Melinda Birmingham. Joe is the son of the late Blanche and Irv Brenner of Pittsburgh. He graduated from Washington and Jefferson College, Phi Beta Kappa, and magna cum laude, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Montefiore Hospital, Pittsburgh was the site of his internship and residency. He came to New Orleans in 1967 to serve as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Public Health Service. He completed his residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in pulmonary diseases at Tulane University School of Medicine and has enthusiastically practiced internal medicine in New Orleans for forty-four years. Joe and Ronnie were married by Justice of the Peace, Gaston Gilbert in Eight Mile, Alabama in 1967, after a long drive from New Orleans and many wrong turns. When the abbreviated civil ceremony concluded with "and in the name of"...long pause..."Governor Lurleen Wallace and President Lyndon Baines Johnson," they knew they were off to a unique start. Later, Cantor David Benedict of Temple Israel, New York added his blessing to the union. They fell in love with New Orleans and never left, apart from a brief exile post Katrina. Dr. Brenner served as President of the Medical Staff, Touro Infirmary, President of Memorial Clinics, Touro Infirmary, and President of the Orleans Parish Medical Society. He was honored on May 30, 2012 with a celebratory reception and plaque for his four decades of service to Touro Infirmary and the Touro community. He also served on the Board of Touro Synagogue. In recent years, he spent most Wednesdays with Ronnie preparing, serving, and sharing dinner with the families and staff at the Ronald McDonald House on Canal Street. Joe took no credit for the cooking and referred to himself as Ronnie's "sous schlepp". Lifelong appreciators, collectors, and donors of art, the Brenners enjoyed being Fellows of the New Orleans Museum of Art. Joe relished the time he spent with his morning coffee gang at Still Perkin'. After crack-of-dawn rounds, he began his day with some hearty laughter, a touch of intellectual exchange, but mostly good repartee. Though there was no cure for his liposarcoma, much of his healing, until the time of his death, came from continuing to practice and serve his patients. Joe's wit, excitement for learning, love for and commitment to his family, patients, and friends make him a man to remember. Friends, patients and colleagues are welcome to a Memorial Service on Sunday, August 5, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Touro Synagogue, 4238 St. Charles Ave., with Rabbi Alexis Berk officiating. Kindly omit flowers. Please make any donations to the Ronald McDonald House, 4403 Canal St., New Orleans, LA 70119, or Touro Infirmary Foundation, 1401 Foucher St., New Orleans, LA 70115. Dear Ronnie, I am so sorry to learn--belatedly--of Joe's death. I had great admiration for him as a physician and man. I really appreciated his wonderful sense of humor (and yours as well). You made a great pair. (The "sous schlepp" comment is a good example of his wit.) I am honored to have known him.

With my most sincere condolences to you,

Tom Jacobsen

To the family of Dr. Joseph Brenner:
My deepest sympathy to your family for the loss of your beloved and my doctor since 1996 when I came to New Orleans to teach. I just learned of his passing this morning when I was at his office having to see another doctor. I burst into tears as if he were a part of my family--and he was.
I have moved from one city to another, one country to another, one continent to another, so I have never had a doctor as long as Dr. Brenner. I come from ex-Yugoslavia, Serbia to be exact, and I am in New Orleans, as Professor of English at Xavier University of Louisiana. In 1999 when the bombing of Yugoslavia by NATO was going on, I lost both parents within six months. I saw Dr. Brenner very frequently during that time, due to severe back pain due to stress and mourning. Dr. Brenner gave me cortisone shots which allowed me to climb Tai Shan, the sacred mountain in China in July that year and then to turn around and go to Serbia to my parents' grave within a month of the bombing. I could not have done it without his care for my life and my well-being.
This is just one instance I wish to share with you about his kindness, respect and care. He has left a permanent mark on my life and that of my family and I will always be grateful to him. He will live in my memory. I am unable to make it to the funeral, but I just wanted to share this with you. I am so sorry.

Sincerely,
Dr. Biljana D. Obradovic with her family

The last time I saw my cousin joseph was in 1960 just before I left for Israel.
Briefly we got in touch in the 90's exchanging photo's of our families. I remember how after dinner all the Katz grandchildren would gather at "Bubbies" house (grandma katz) and get icecream. Joseph had a full happy and rich life. It was sad to hear of his passing. My prayers to the family. Kenny (Hanna) Katz. (Sam and Silvias daughter)

I could have never wished for a finer Brother in Law. Joe was full of wit, humor, intelligence, wisdom and old fashioned common sense. In1994 close to death I flew to New Orleans and he saved my life. Ron and Joe never left
my side and I am here today thanks to their love and care.
He was a remarkable man,a loving husband,a great father
and grandfather and a dear friend. He will be greatly missed by us all.
Love,
Peter Rittmaster
